Magic Johnson faced many tough competitors like Larry Bird. Johnson and Larry Bird were first linked as rivals after Johnson's Michigan State squad defeated Bird's Indiana State team in the 1979 NCAA finals. The rivalry continued in the NBA, and reached its climax when Boston and Los Angeles met in three out of four NBA Finals from 1984 to 1987. Several journalists hypothesized that the Johnson–Bird rivalry was so appealing because it represented many other contrasts, such as the clash between the Lakers and Celtics and the blacks and whites. With this rivalry between Johnson and Bird it…

A Poem for “Magic”, written by Quincy Troupe is a truly dazzling poem. I’m not usually one who can easily relate to a poem but this one elicits so much passion for the game of basketball that it resonates in my head. The way that the game is described in the poem makes me think back to the mindset I had when I was just a little kid playing dunk ball on my 6 foot hoop in the driveway. I could do whatever I wanted on that hoop and it made the game feel magical being able to fly above the rim just how I imagine Magic Johnson feels when he’s playing on a regular 10 foot hoop.…
