We all want to understand what knowledge is, where it comes from, and how it affects us.     Before the Renaissance, art primarily focused on themes of faith and religion and was insignificant. As the Renaissance Era continued, however, art became more valued. As time progressed, only certain people could learn the skill of painting. In a book called The Book of Courtier, the writer, Castiglione, emphasizes, “children of gentle birth were required to learn painting at school, as worthy and necessary accomplishment. … a public law was passed forbidding it to be taught to slaves” (Doc 2). During the Renaissance Era, social class was very prominent as the middle class could now learn new skills that the wealthy could as well. This not only increased the knowledge of many people but also gave us insight of how prosperous this time in age was. As new ideas were being born, art was reborn; new techniques for painting began to develop, revolutionizing art as we know it. A famous painter named Masaccio created a new type of work. His work contains three dimensional images and lifelike figures. (Doc 5) This creativity not only benefited him, but also inspired people others to be unique with their own work which ultimately resulting in the creation various eclectic pieces. These ideas about art as well as ideas of the period spread through trade. Because Italy is located near numerous large bodies of water, they were able to maintain many ports.     During this time pieces of artworks were being produced at a strong rate. This was due that artists were gaining recognition over large areas. This new fondness of artwork that contained humanistic influences were new, and people were amazed by the style that had not been seen before in their lifetime. A large proportion of the artwork that was being made was made for the church and popes. One such artwork was the school of Athens, created by Raphael Sanzio, for the Apostolic Palace, in Vatican City. This work is of a grand scale in that was commonly taken on by the artists of the time. This particular fresco is 16’’5’ by 23’’ 3’ and is one of Raphael’s more famous works. Just by looking at this fresco you can see the strong influence of humanism. The theme itself is a strong give away, for it has a landscape full of philosophers from ancient times. As the lines of the fresco draw your eye the center of the landscape, you see two of the giants of ancient Greek philosophy Aristotle and Plato. One of the reasons that your eye is drawn toward the center of the painting is because Raphael was able to use the concept of using a vanishing point to make this 2d painting 3d.     What appears to be so to me is true for me, and what appears to be so to you is true for you. It follows that everyone’s perceptions are equally true. This of course is the extreme form of relativism that Protagoras claims when he asserts that man is the measure of all things in regards to truth. It seems that if all perceptions (e.g. judgments and beliefs) are equally true, there can be no room for expertise. But what is Protagoras to say of our natural inclination that such things as wisdom and the wise really do exist among individuals? If Protagoras’ relativism is to be accepted, he must explain how expertise is possible. Protagoras does not deny that some men are wiser than others, but he disagrees that some men are right while others are wrong. Though some men may appear to be wiser than others, it does not follow that their beliefs or judgments are truer than men who lack expertise in the given field; rather, and this is an important distinction that Protagoras makes, the judgments and beliefs of the wise are to be understood as being better (not truer) than those who lack expertise. For Protagoras, the wise man is the man “who can change the appearances—the man who in any case where bad things both appear and are for one of us, works a change and makes good things appear and be for him” (166d).…
