Kody's Pond: My Nephew Kody's Favorite Spot
Kody’s Pond
Green
Grass on the shore
Trees blowing in the wind
Weeds in the water
Water rippling around the lily pads
Heat and Humidity
Smells of decaying plants
Quiet except for frogs and insects
Peace

My nephew, Kody is a 10 year old boy who loves all things I conceder gross. He loves all slimy reptiles, flying, buzzing insects, and most of all, smelly fish. Kody sneaks off at time for hours to his favorite spot we call Kody’s Pond. When I first saw his kingdom, all I could see was green. The tall grass along the shore line was green, the weeds lying across the water was green, and the trees blowing in the wind were green. The green of the pond had a smell of decaying plants which attacked your senses. The day was hot and humid so the stickiness of my skin felt as though the green was attaching itself to me. As I’m standing there watching Kody reign over his kingdom, I felt a peace I’ve never felt before. All was quiet except the hum of insects, chirps from the frogs, and the slight splashes of the water as it danced around the lily pads. I began to realize this is not gross, it’s beautiful and I’m thankful to my nephew for sharing his pond with me.

In “To Paint a Water Lily,” by Ted Hughes, the speaker examines the complex aspects of nature by revealing the challenges he faces as an artist in capturing its real meaning. When he looks at the scene, he sees an exciting little world of constant movement and activity, hidden by the peaceful stillness of the water lilies that float at the surface of the pond. Ted knows that to paint the water lily and do it righteousness requires more than a simple description of the plant itself—he must also somehow capture its environment; the busy life that surrounds it. The power with which the speaker describes this incredible task and the appreciation he feels for the outstanding convolution of nature is expressed through the use of tone, language, imagery, diction and figurative language.…

The little boy in Green Gulch is completed devastated when he experiences the brutal murder of the turtle. He uses a lot of metaphors to describe what he thought of the murderers and evil overall, “I think looking back that it must have been a little, like a child following goblins home to their hill at night fall.” And, “a grimy, splattered gnome who had been stooping over the turtle.” The child’s knowledge of evil mainly comes from fairytales and stories for he uses goblins and gnomes to represent what he thinks evil is but his genuine discovery and thoughts about evil are revealed when he states, “ I had discovered evil. It was monstrous and corroding knowledge.” His understandings toward evil changes after he experiences and digests the brutal and savage incident. He overcomes a stage of maturity and comes to know what evil truly is and how it spreads, “some curious evil impulse passed like a wave.” The boy feels the…

“The small waves were the same, chucking the rowboat under the chin as we fished at anchor, and the boat was the same boat, the same color green and the ribs broken in the same places, and under the floorboards the same fresh water leavings and debris- the dead hellgrammite, the wisps of moss, the rusty discarded fishhook, the dried blood from yesterday’s catch” (White 195-196).…

Passage 1 uses visual imagery to describe elaborately the positive nature at the Okefenokee Swamp. The “primitive swamp” is located in “southeastern Georgia and northern Florida” and is a “shallow saucer-shaped.” Passage 1 also dramatically uses adjectives to inform about the unique qualities you can find present at the swamp, “exotic flowers such as floating hearts, and rare orchids” located in the “open water”. Passage 1 informs persuasive material to try to attract tourists to visit but as the passage has sucked the audience in it gives almost a subliminal message about the alligators being present so the visitors will know but ignore it because of all the other positive attracts at the Swamp.…

The fish tank is a symbol of the ebb and flow between good and bad times. The fish’s existence which relies solely on the owner 's hand is predictable only by the constancy of the protagonists’ marriage. When the marriage is stable the aquarium is clean, the fish is well fed and happy “wondrously free, swimming – for all he knew – in Lake Superior… free of desires, needs, and everything else” (218). This clean state represents the favorable parts of life. When the marriage become unstable the opposite happens, the aquarium became a filthy mess, “the water so clotted it had become a substantial mass, a putty within the fish was presumably swimming, or dead” (215). The dirty stage symbolizes the base facets of life; the water is restricted, dark, and full of need. The fish tank is a representation of the ephemeral nature of life and the good and bad times we all face in our own lives.…

As a boy I didn’t care much for school nor the environment for that matter. I was oblivious to my home; I littered, left the tap running, and don’t remember a particular time I carpooled. I was apathetic to the creatures and wildlife around me. I was a young boy who didn’t care for anything but himself. But all that changed once I heard the legend of the mysterious river behind Pete Gallegos. I was a gullible boy who pictured an oasis filled with hundreds of fish, a beautiful green grassland filled with deer and enclosed by an overabundance of majestic green mesquites. It would have been Deer Runs Garden of Eden, that is if I found it. I immediately went to my best friend Felipe’s house and told him what I heard. He was not as intrigued and enthusiastic as I was; he merely came because he thought this would make a great story one day. I then packed our gear, this included a ham sandwich with the crusts cut off and two chilly Dr. Peppers. And so we rode for about two minutes until then we got there; we only lived a few blocks from Pete Gallegos. I lunged…

As I got out of my car on the early, frigid, summer morning, with my heavy weighters in one hand and my scrub brush and other tools in the other, I walked through the dirt, sand and insect infested grasses, for about a half mile, to the bay. Sliding on my dad’s old fishing waders, men’s size 9 boots, which were way too big on me, and almost falling trying to pull them on. Stepping into the quiet bay, disrupting the gentle waves left un touches from the day before, I embarked into the bay, ready to spend hours cleaning ten dirty oyster cages, already more dirtier than last week when I cleaned them. The constant scrubbing and flipping varied with each cage, finding flopping fish or shooing away the crabs from the cage. Dangerously, falling into the water above my waders and my hands being covered in algae and dirt, never make me rethink my decision.…

Very recently, Nathan (my 12 year old son) and I were in our back yard throwing Frisbee. He has gotten into Frisbee golf (disc golf) and was showing me some of the tosses he had learned. We were having a blast. During this fun time, Nathan walked over to a small sink-hole in the ground he had discovered a while back. The hole is about 5 inches in diameter and about 18 inches deep. Peering into the bottom of the hole, Nathan exclaimed, "The frog is still living in here!" He went on to share that he had seen the frog in the hole about a week earlier. He had concluded that this is where the frog had chosen to live.…

At whose foot the frog sang till the break of dawn.…

Dutton expresses strong opposition to those who are more concerned with themselves than the environment and ocean, stating that “if you think it’s bad in the lineup for you…it’s far worse for the organisms that live in there 24/7” (396). The appeal leans towards Californian Surfers and those who are environmentally conscious enough to buy organic food and are mindful of how things like motor oil and yard waste are disposed of. Dutton minimizes ailments that humans may suffer, stating that dangerous parasites that cause cancers and disease in sea creatures are “a far cry from an ear infection, a common cold, or the runs” (397). While caring for the environment is undoubtedly important, diminishing the importance and severity of human illnesses and conditions seemed excessive. This approach portrays Dutton as more of an alarmist than an advocate. Because he wants to create some kind of connection with his audience, Dutton uses a strong emotional appeal. The effect that Dutton’s essay achieves is that it forces readers to think about pollution’s effect on the wildlife that lives in the water and the responsibility of humans. His personal narrative attempts to help the audience relate to a time where they have been in the ocean for a significant period of time and came out feeling sick and make…

I also went inside this room with dead fish and bloody water. Donna was cleaning fish, the room smelled really badly and I think they should create vents which would help change the smell. The farm store is just the little part of the whole aquaculture. On the other side of the farm it has large tanks which hold about eight-thousand tilapia. They also have large tanks where the filtered water supplies the plants and they are selling the fish and crops to the locals in the U.S.V.I.…
