Kony 2012 Film Analysis

The Invisible Children foundation was originally founded by Jason Russell and Bobby Bailey in 2004. These filmmakers traveled to Africa with anticipation to discover a story, to share with viewers all around the country. They had no idea what they had found would soon escalate into being one of the most talked about subjects: Kony 2012. The filmmakers established a war that had continued for over 20 years, in Africa. To their surprise, someone titled Joseph Kony captured children, and forced them to become soldiers in The Lord’s Resistance army. Joseph Kony abducted over 30,000 children during this time (Cadwalladr, 2013 ). The 30 minute video accepted a lot of fame, very rapidly. The Kony 2012 online video reached 100 million views in less than a week (Children, 2012). Nobody anticipated this, yet were very astonished for all the overwhelming support. The video contains Jason, the producer, explaining his life after traveling across Africa. Jason takes us back a couple years previously, when he rescued Jacob, a young boy who feared Kony. Jacob was used to demonstrate the reality of this cruel event occurring in today’s society. Jacob had a rough life, prior to being rescued. He and his family were abducted by the Rebel Army. Kony executed everyone in Jacob’s family, excluding him. In fact, Jacob was still mourning the recent loss of all his family members. The major statement that stood out to Jason, was the words Jacob said. “I would rather die, then stay on earth in this horrible place.” (Children, 2012) In that moment, Jason knew he had to do something.
