Jim is a donkey. He has this urge to create new levels of madness “on the daily”. Jim sits his lazy bum in his La-Z-Boy and pretends he has a job by staring at a computer all day. And the breathing. Oh my heavens the man breaths like Big Foot having an asthma attack. The car rides with Jim are the worst. He always brings an apple, but then doesn't eat it until you're in the car and can't escape the chewing sounds. You'd think a grown man in his fifties would have learned to chew with his mouth closed. Between the unholy chewing of the apples and the human ventilator, the side of the road starts looking real friendly.…

Susan Wolf, in writing about her own father's death, is facing a difficult and emotional issue that challenges her to consider her views on assisted suicide (Wolf, 2008). Assisted suicide is the common term for actions by which an individual helps another person voluntarily brings about his or her own death. "Assistance" may mean providing one with the means to end one's own life. In the article, “Confronting Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia”, by Susan Wolf, Susan shares the difficult and painful death of her father.…

The people who inhabit a community and their interactions with one another comprise a society. These repeated interactions allow people to internalize or, hold true, what society portrays as everyday norms and values. These norms and values are instilled during childhood through the time he or she becomes an adult. Amiri Baraka’s autobiography “School” and Lisa Keiski’s essay “Suicide’s Forgotten Victims,” makes this evident. In both “School” and “Suicide’s Forgotten Victims,” Baraka’s and Keiski’s daily interactions with their peers, authority figures, and society contribute to the formulation of important life…

In my first case, I was assigned to call of a suicide involving the husband as the victim and a distraught thirty-five year old wife who was present at the suicide scene. For the purposes of this paper, I will refer to her as Lisa. Prior to arriving on scene, I conducted a comprehensive background check on Lisa through the local law enforcement agency. I paid particular attention to any drug related arrests, crimes involving violence or any mental evaluation holds. This helped me gauge if Lisa suffered from any mental illnesses or was prone to violence or drug usage as a means to cope with the situation.…

My grandfather, who served in the Vietnam war in the 1960’s, started suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) within 2 months after he returned home from combat. After all the tragedy he experienced during the war, it has been so hard for him to forget, and adapt to the environment. Every time he goes to the restaurant, or any place that is surrounded with too many people, he gets panic attacks. He also faces difficulty sleeping, blames himself, and feels guilty because of what happened to some of his friends who were with him in the battle, and did not return home alive from combat. He even thought about taking his own life by shooting himself in the head because he was very depressed,…

This is a really good topic. My first job in nursing was in surgical oncology, which was a very mentally and emotionally challenging field. My oncology patients would range from young adult to elderly. Some would confide and tell me how they wish their illness would just take them to end the suffering. I would find myself so torn and wonder how I would feel if I had a sickness pretty much ripping the life out of me. Part of me thinks I would want to give up as my patients expressed and explore option to end the suffering, such as physician assisted suicide, but part of me thinks I would want to fight.…

A social problem that I would recommend intervention and social change to is the rate of suicide, especially among college students and young adults. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for college students, and the third among young adults. The main cause for this issue is untreated mental illnesses, specifically depression. Depression spikes in college students as they are exposed to new, typically stressful, environments. Although we have made some progress, our society is still wrapped up in the stigma surrounding mental illness. Young adults are afraid to seek help for fear of being labeled, and often they do not know where to go for help or do not live in an area where help is readily available. I believe an elimination of the…

I personally am torn on the issue of whether people should have to ask permission to commit suicide or not, I really see both sides of the argument. One part of me really feels that people should have the right to do what they want with their bodies, without having to ask permission from others. The other half of me thinks that in a lot of cases that suicide is not the answer, and with help and treatment those people could really seriously be healed from these thoughts that suicide is the only way out of their issues and problems. There are lots of programs that offer crisis intervention which our book defines as, “Thus the program offers crisis intervention: they try to help suicidal people see their situations more accurately, make better…

There are many court cases that deal with assisted suicide. Many people think that assisted suicide should be passed under the law, and other people think that it should not be passed under the law. I am going to be talking about 3 court cases that may or may not be considered as assisted suicide. In my point of view, I believe that assisted suicide should not be permitted. I am going to be discussing the Washington v. Glucksberg, Gonzalez v. Oregon, and Vacco v. Quill.…
