The minute it’s talons met the icy ground, it began to whirl and transform. Gold, scarlet, and chestnut colours spiralled; taller and taller the figure grew. The people watched in bewilderment; where the bird once landed, now stood a ravishing young maiden. Her face was shielded by a basket hat, and her mountain goat skin shawl danced about in the harsh wind.
The Kwakiutl chief, Pure River, stepped forward to greet their enchanted guest.
“Who are you?” He offered.
The maiden looked up. The people saw at once that she was a descendant of a Great One, for her eyes contained the passion of a raging inferno. Her fiery orbs were determined and brave, yet also contained gentleness and grace.
Her voice was like the trickling streams of Spring. “I am Ala, daughter of the sun. I have come to help you.”
The crowd stood in silence and awe. Her aura of power and beauty mesmerized the villagers.
Then, like the deltas after rainfall, the Kwakiutl people flooded the sun daughter with questions.
“What has happened to your father?”
“Why did this happen?”
“How come our prayers were never answered?”
