In most Spanish-speaking countries, the word that most people learn for lunch is “almuerzo.” In countries, like Spain, and urban Mexico, they do not call it almuerzo, they call it la Comida instead. La Comida is a home cooked meal, very much like the soul food of the family. La Comida is had over prayer and conversation between family members. To people from these Spanish speaking countries, la Comida seems to stay the same term all across the board as the hour of life, which gives us life and makes us remember who we are and where we come from. This time, it’s people coming together right around 11, right between the morning and the afternoon. This usually consists of last morning histories, first meals of the day for the children, and reconciliations over some sweet potatoes with cornbread. Now, the case changes if you head to the Caribbean, Peru, and Colombia, as la Comida means supper, not lunch. And to confuse matters more, the term comida defines food in general. Oddly, Ecuador borders both Peru and Colombia, and the country uses la merienda to define supper. In nearly every other country in the world, a merienda is the term for a snack. In Spanish speaking countries, there are slightly too many terms that are used to describe what to English speakers merely is breakfast, brunch, lunch, and
