Community development seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing these groups with the skills they need to effect change in their own communities. These skills are often concentrated around building political power through the formation of large social groups working for a common agenda (p. 373).
This relates to how I, as a social worker at La Comunidad Hispana, can empower each member of a Mexican immigrant family to come together as a group. In this group all the members of the Mexican immigrant families can work together alongside community members to empower each other to help reach out to other community members to fight for social, political, and economic justice for immigrant families. I could also use social planning for community outreach. The first stage is Intake. During this process “the presenting concerns and needs of prospective members are identified” (Zastrow, 2015, p. 18). I would use the Tuckman Model of Group Development for implementing this group. The Tuckman Model’s first phase is Forming. In this phase, relationships are formed, as well as group rules and procedures (Zastrow, 2015). This is where I would also make the Selection of Members of who would be in the group. During the Forming phase, I would identify myself as the group facilitator, and establish rapport with these women. To establish rapport I would speak Spanish and let them know that this is a safe space and anything they say here will be kept confidential. This is also were Assessment and Planning would take
