Experiment #1
Measurement, Length, Mass, Volume, Density, & Time
Objectives:
To make basic distance, mass, density, and time measurements.
To make calculations of volume and density, using proper units, and to practice using graphing software while graphing the relationship between the circumference of a circle and its diameter. Materials: stopwatch meter tape 3 rectangular objects metric ruler pencils metal bolt 500‐G scale graduated cylinder five circular objects
Lab Notes: 1. Estimation of Various Measurements: A. Length:
1. Estimate the length of a meter by putting a pen on an end of a table and place a second pen 1 m away from the first. 2. I started my estimation, by putting a pen about 1 m away from the end of the table. I then used the metric tape measure to measure the actual length I estimated. 3. My estimated length was 92.7 cm 4. Calculate the percent error of your estimated meter from the actual meter. Percentage error formula: Percentage error =
92.7 – 100 = -7.3/100x100% My estimated percent of error is -7.3%.
B. Time:
1. Estimate a 30 second time. While someone else times you using and stopwatch.
2. My estimated time was 33.6 seconds.
3. Calculate the percent of error of the estimate the actual time. Percentage error formula: Percentage error = 33.6– 30 = 3.6/30x100% I experienced a 12% error when estimating a 30 second time period.
C. Mass:
1. For this experiment I used my cell phone to estimate its mass. I estimated it’s mass to be 90 g.
2. I then calibrated the scale so that its reading was at zero. I then placed the cell phone on the scale. The scale showed that the actual mass of the cell phone to be 113 g
3. I then calculated the percent of error using the
