Observations
Materials: * Barium Iodide- White and powdery * Zinc Sulfate- White and powdery * Boiling Chips- Tiny, grey and rock like
Experimental Observations:
Barium Iodide used- .63g
Zinc Sulfate used- .45g
Boling Tube with 2 boiling chips- 41.52g
Barium Iodide in solution with 2 mL of deionized water looks cloudy. Zinc Sulfate in solution with 2 mL of deionized water is clear. Barium Iodide solution mixed with Zinc Sulfate solution turns milky white. After first centrifugation, solution separates into Barium Sulfate precipitate and Zinc Iodide supernatant. Supernatant is decanted into boiling tube. After second centrifugation we are left with more precipitate and a little more supernatant. Supernatant is poured off again and precipitate is washed again with another 1 mL of deionized water. After third centrifugation very little supernatant is left. We add the supernatant to the boiling tube. The Barium Sulfate waste product is disposed of properly in the waste beaker. We heat our boiling tube in the Bunsen burner and we are left with a small amount of white powdery Zinc Iodide. Mass of test tube with zinc iodide- 42g.
We made a total of .48g of zinc iodide.

    Starting out the experiment, HCl was added to the solution in the test-tube in order to form a reaction between the HCl, Ag, Pb, and Hg cations. The products of this addition of HCl were PbCl2, AgCl, and Hg2Cl2. After the HCl was added, the solution turned a milky white color. It was important to not add too much HCl because excess HCl would have caused an aqueous complex of PbCl2 and AgCl to form instead of the desired solid PbCl2. The mixture was then centrifuged in order to let the solid particles of the three ions to fall to the bottom. Another drop of HCl was added to test if the reaction had been completed. If the solution were to turn milky white again then it would’ve signaled an incomplete reaction between the cations and HCl. The next objective was to separate the lead(II) ion from the mixture. The test tube with all three solids precipitated at the bottom was heated, which allowed the PbCl2 to dissolve. The supernatant fluid containing the Pb(II) ions was then separated from the solid mercury(I) ions and solid silver ions decanting, adding a drop of acetic acid to the supernatant fluid, and also adding two drops of K2CrO4 to the test tube. A milky yellow mixture was observed as this indicated the presence of the lead (II) ion. This insoluble yellow precipitate was the insoluble compound of PbCrO4. The molecular formula gives the actual number of atoms of each element in the molecule and the empirical formula gives the lowest whole number ratio of the atoms in the molecule. For instance, the molecular formula of glucose is C6H12O6 and its empirical formula is CH2O. For some molecules such as water, the empirical and molecular formulas are the same. One of the common techniques used to help determine the identity of a substance involves combustion of very small amounts of the substance. By measuring the amounts of water, carbon dioxide, and other gases produced, it is possible to determine the percentage by mass of each element in the compound. From the percentages, it is possible to calculate the empirical formula of the compound. Suppose, for example, that the combustion experiment for a compound that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen gives the compositions as 40.00% carbon, 6.71% hydrogen, and 53.29% oxygen by mass. The goal is to convert mass percentages to mole or atom ratios. Whenever dealing with percentages in a calculation of this type, one of the easiest ways to proceed is to assume that you have 100 g of the substance. Thus 100 g of the substance contains 40.00 g of carbon, 6.71 g of hydrogen and 53.29 g of oxygen. As is common for many chemical calculations, the calculation of the number of moles is one of the first steps.
