Lab Report
Abstract: This report presents the reason why the ocean does not freeze in the winter. Since the ocean consists of salt water, an experiment was done to test the effect of freezing on salt water compared to pure water. The experiment was conducted three times in order to obtain accurate results and eliminate errors. In addition to the salt and pure water experiment, a variation of this experiment was created to test other options. In the variation experiment the effect of freezing on sugar water was conducted.
Materials and Method: In order to set up the experiment, two 16 oz measuring cups were collected. One was labeled pure water and the other was labeled salt water. One cup of cold tap water was poured into both cups and two tablespoons of iodized table salt was dissolved in the cup labeled salt water. After that, both cups were placed in the freezer. Every 15 minutes, the state of the water in the cups were observed and recorded until the water in both cups froze. This experiment was conducted three times for accuracy with the same materials and method.
A variation of this experiment was then set up to test the effect of freezing on sugar water. The same two 16 oz measuring cups were used and one cup of cold tap water was poured in both cups. One cup was labeled pure water and the other was labeled sugar water. Then, two tablespoons of sugar was dissolved in the cup labeled sugar water. After that, both cups were placed in the freezer and the state of the water in both cups were observed and recorded every 15 minutes. This experiment was also conducted three times for accuracy with the same materials and method.

The purpose of the experiment was to find the percent of water in Epsom salts by heating it. To find the percent of water in a hydrate, the hydrate must be heated. The experiment did not only show how dehydration occurs, but this experiment also gives an accurate and definite portrayal of the amount of water that is removed…

    * Literature Review- I’ve read many post on the internet arguing which freezes fastest, In particular there have been two specific ones that have caught my eye. I found this interesting video over a similar science experiment (Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOVZV6DxaRs).In this experiment it is not done in a freezer it is actually done outside on a cold day (-15 degrees.) What the experiments consists of is using two cups of water one is filled with cold water (35 degrees) and the other cup of water is filled with hot water (212 degrees.) The way he goes about conducting his experiment is simply stepping out and tossing the two glasses in the air the cold water falls to the ground still wet and on the other hand when the hot water falls to the ground it falls solid as ice thus proving that hot water freezes fastest. In my opinion this experiment isn’t as controlled as it should be there are many uncontrolled variables that are not even mention, but he does repeat the experiment two separate times leaving the viewer with some sense of validness. I found another experiment online (link: http://www.fizzicseducation.com.au/experiments/Kitchen%20Chemistry/freezing%20hot%20water.html ) it is a very short and not very detailed. The supplies listed are very concise but the directions are not. The afterward explanation of the experiment solely relies on the Mpemba effect but yet it doesn’t really conclude the experiment. I don’t not like that it leaves a lot of open questions but it does support my experiment.…

But, a mixture of 20% NaCl and liquid water will have a lower freezing point (2 degrees Fahrenheit) than a mixture of 10% NaCl and liquid water (4). The 20% solution will then melt the ice much faster (though it isn't practical)(4). The material that melts ice the fastest is the material that dissolves into the greatest number of particles in a solution of that material and liquid water(4). It is important to learn how fast ice melts in different liquids because the Earth is currently going through global. If someone was able to find a way to keep ice from melting then maybe they could find a way to keep the polar ice caps from melting. Which could keep various animals from going extinct. If I place the ice in each liquid when they are at room temperature then I think the ice will melt fastest in the saltwater. When I first thought about which liquid would melt the ice the fastest I originally thought it would be the Pepsi because of the carbonation. But when I did research I found that the saltwater actually melted the ice melt the fastest. Which is one of the main reasons salt is put down on the ground when there is snow or ice on the…

If one teaspoon of ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, and sodium chloride are added to separate glasses of water, then ammonium chloride will keep the water cold the longest because it is most commonly used in brand name cold packs. In order to test the hypothesis, the scientists will label four cups to keep track of what chemical will go in each cup. One will just be plain water, while the next will be labeled ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, etc. Then the scientists will pour fifty mL of water into each cup and measure the temperature of the water in each cup. The scientists will then add one teaspoon of each chemical into the corresponding cup.…

The first task was a conservation of liquid. I had two identical cups filled with the same amount of water, and one empty cup that was shorter and wider than the other two cups. I asked each student if the water was equal in the two cups, if they said yes, then I poured one of the cups of water into the third cup, and if they said no I would add a little more water to one of the cups until the student thought it had an equal amount of water in each cup and then I would pour one of the cups of water into the third one. Next I asked each student which cup had more water, the third cup that I just poured water into or the first cup that I never touched that still had water in it.…
