In “Indian Education” Sherman Alexie tells his story of overcoming racial limitations through the narrator, “Victor”. At the start, Victor defined himself as an Indian, but later on he distances himself from the label. While Victor was first grade, he was singled out by the other Indian boys, “the other Indian boys chased me from one corner of the playground to the other”; Victor was also compared to a white boy crying, despite the fact that none of the Indian boys have seen a white boy cry, “Once it was Cries-Like-a-White-Boy, even though none of us had seen a white boy cry.” In the second grade he was singled out by the teacher, even though he was not he only Indian. “She sent a letter home with me that told my parents to either cut my braids or keep me home from class. My parents came in the next day and dragged their braids across Betty Towle’s desk.“Indians, indians, indians.” She said it without capitalization. She called me “indian, indian, indian.”And I said, Yes I am, I am Indian. Indian, I am.” However, Victor slowly realizes that he is not like the other Indians and mentally leaves the reservation in the seventh grade. ” But I was saying good-bye to my tribe, to all the Indian girls and women I might have loved, to all the Indian men who might have called me cousin, even brother.” Like Alexie, Victor also had his educational opportunities limited; the narrator has been shown to be much more intelligent than the other Indian kids, being able to finish a test made for junior high students perfectly. Again like Alexie, the narrator goes to high school of the reservation. Here he sees the differences between whites, and the upbringing he had, ““Give me your lunch if you’re just going to throw it up,” I said to one of those girls once…Back on the reservation, my mother stood in line to get us commodities.” Seeing the difference between him and whites, he made a subconscious connection to the dark skinned Mexican teacher.     Victor almost seems to admire Thomas, because Thomas doesn’t care what other people think about him. Although Victor wants to escape from the standards of the white people, he still conforms to their culture because he is afraid of ridicule. However, Thomas doesn’t let other peoples’ opinions affect him, and Victor is jealous of his nonchalant attitude towards other people. “Everyone has dreams about flying. Thomas flew,” (70). Thomas has confidence in himself, which is something that most everyone else in the reservation seems to lack. When Victor sees Thomas’s confidence, he begins avoiding Thomas, perhaps because of jealousy, or possibly because he is afraid of what other people might think about Victor if they see him with Thomas.     The main character in “The School Days of an Indian Girl” becomes very successful in her schoolwork and goes on to win many prestigious awards. The the whites worked so hard to hold back the blacks and to make better the Native Americans. Instead, they were really enriching the black with motivation to succeed and the Native Americans with the want to be great and to prove that they were nothing less than the palefaces. The man who is narrating “From the Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man” is astonished at the fact that the man of color was a physician and “a graduate of Howard University, Washington” as well as had completed “post-graduate work in Philadelphia” (Johnson pg. 1013). All this time people were thinking of colored men as not capable of being equal when in reality they were achieving the same as any white man. They were experiencing America as success stories that were not celebrated. In “The School Days of an Indian Girl” we are made aware by the author that the main character becomes very intelligent and when she enters an oratorical contest she is “awarded first place” by the judges.     Culture plays a big part in both of these stories, and shows the effects on identity when you are deprived of your culture. In “Growing Up Native”, the First Nations people are shamed for the culture they have and are obligated to adopt another culture. Typically, in their culture they have long hair, but in these residential schools they were forced to cut it, because it was thought that they had lice. They were told that Indian culture is evil and their only hope was to be Christian. Also, in the book it said “They had to stand up and say things like ‘I’ve found the Lord,’ when a teacher told them to speak” (Carol Geddes, Growing Up Native, page 46). The teachers embarrassed and harassed them for some reasons the children couldn’t control. Typically in First Nations culture the boys would go out to hunt, and the females would stay in school. Therefore, the boys wouldn’t get as much of an education as he girls, and their skills may not have developed as fast. The residential school teachers did not take this into account and tried to embarrass the boys when they couldn’t read in class. They asked the girls to read instead but it goes against their culture to show up to an older boy. These children lost their identities and felt humiliated by these residential school teachers making them go against their original traditions.
