LABOR MIGRATION IN KAISONPHOMVIHANE DISTRICT, SAVANNAKHET PROVINCE, LAO PDR.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research was to identify general situation of labor migration in kaisonphomvihane district to Thailand, to examine the factors influencing the decision of people from Kaisonphomvihane district to work in Thailand, to understand more about working condition of Lao worker in Thailand.

This study was conducted in 8 villages (Thaxano villages, Gnangphosi village, Donxeng village, Phukkha village, Phonsim villages, Xokvang village, Kanghinsoung village and Dongmakyang village) of Kaisonphomvihane district, Savannakhet province. 104 household of interviewees are who had family’s members used to work in Thailand. Beside that the chiefs of 8 villages and district official of department of Labor and social welfare were interviewed. And in this research was used in both of qualitative and quantities research methodology, but we had more placed important on qualitative analysis.

The result of this research indicated that people who live in the villages that far from The Mekong River had higher rate of migration than people in the villages near the Mekong people, the majority people prefer went to work in Bangkok capital of Thailand more than another province, which they were helped by friends for crossed border and seeking job for them. The hot jobs that many people liked to work are maids and labors in manufactory and the main reason for going to work in Thailand were economic hardship in their household.
