Pyrite is a very interesting mineral for many reasons. The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word “pyr” which means “fire,” and was named because it was found that sparks would fly from it if struck against another minerals like steel. In early times, this sparking ability gave people a way of creating fire, and in later times, this ability made it popular for use in early firearms devices like the wheel lock. Today Pyrite is called “Fools Gold” because throughout history people have mistaken it for Gold because of its similar visible structure, metallic surface and brassy yellow color. The funny thing is Gold is often found with to Pyrite deposits. Pyrite can easily be distinguished from Gold. Pyrite is much lighter in color and much harder. Even though Pyrite is a fairly hard mineral, its crystals are known to break and crumble, because it is brittle.…

In the game “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, rock always beats scissors. In the poem, the stone brags of its ability to have power over time and boasts of its strength and power over human wishes. The first word of the poem is “Mine”, noting that the audience has entered the argument between stone, paper, and scissors in the middle. The power that the stone is claiming a victory over is not universal power, but the power over time. Claiming power over such a great thing like time reveals the minuteness of the stone itself, making the loneliness of the stone evident.…

My research paper will examine the impact Canadian temperance movements had on the enactment of prohibition in Canada. By looking at multiple temperance organizations in different provinces the paper will argue that Canadian prohibition was able to be codified due to, in part, the efforts made by those in the temperance movement. The paper will begin by examining the relationship between early temperance movements and the enactment of the Canada Temperance Act or Dunkin Act of 1864. It will then address the Canada Temperance Act or Scott Act of 1878 and how the conditions in Canada changed to allow for a new type of prohibition to be enacted, one which allowed municipalities to opt-in to prohibition by plebiscite. The paper will also focus…

Nietzsche's thought extended a deep influence during the 20th century, especially in Continental Europe. In English-speaking countries, his positive reception has been less resonant. During the last decade of Nietzsche's life and the first decade of the 20th century, his thought was particularly attractive to avant-garde artists who saw themselves on the periphery of established social fashion and practice. Here, Nietzsche's advocacy of new, healthy beginnings, and of creative artistry in general stood forth. His tendency to seek explanations for commonly-accepted values and outlooks in the less-elevated realms of sheer animal instinct was also crucial to Sigmund Freud's development of psychoanalysis. Later, during the 1930's, aspects of Nietzsche's thought were espoused by the Nazis and Italian Fascists, partly due to the encouragement of Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche through her associations with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. It was possible for the Nazi interpreters to assemble, quite selectively, various passages from Nietzsche's writings whose juxtaposition appeared to justify war, aggression and domination for the sake of nationalistic and racial self-glorification.…
