Lady Luck
Oprah Winfrey is a name familiar to most people. She has been a television talk show host and celebrity, as well as an Academy Award winning actress. She has been a role model and moral compass to many and has provided America with the guidance of other trusted hosts such as Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil. Ms. Winfrey has proven herself to be a self-driven, insightful woman. She has overcome numerous obstacles and hardships in her life to become one of the most successful, respected and trusted women in recent history. When Oprah made the statement that “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity”, I believe she is speaking from a place of experience and observation, and I believe her words to be absolute truth.
In my adult life I have decided to further my education and prepare myself to be a better nurse as well as a better role model to my children. While completing nursing school I made the difficult choice to continue full time employment in the medical field while raising three small children. While my road to RN was a challenging one, when I completed my goal I was able to instantly transfer into the position of telemetry nurse at the local hospital. At the same time, over 70% of my class was not able to find employment for over a year. How was it that I was able to achieve my goal so quickly? Was it luck? Yes, if luck is defined as Oprah has stated it to be. Perhaps it was lucky that there was a position open at just the right time. Perhaps it was luck that I worked with nursing preceptors during my schooling who were willing to put in a good work for me. I do believe, though, that without my hard work and preparation, my perceived good luck may not have developed into my success.
In so many aspects of life I can see Oprah’s words to ring true. Am I lucky that I have three healthy children? Absolutely. Does it help that I had early medical care, followed the doctor’s orders and followed a healthy lifestyle while pregnant?

Luck has always been a word that can stir up a debate on whether or not it exists. Some people believe luck exists and there’s nothing you can do to change your failure or success. Yet there are others that believe the actions you partake in to reach many opportunities will determine success or failure. Personally I agree with the following notion by Oprah Winfrey that says “luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” My reasons for agreeing are because the actions you take will always determine your outcome and preparation is a great factor when faced with any and all opportunities.…

Whether success is by chance, is up to you to interpret what chance means. If chance means that the kids born earlier in the year were lucky enough to be born at that time, then yes, success comes by chance. The way I interpret is that success does not come from chance. Yes, these kids were born earlier in the year, therefore, were given a better chance. But through that chance, they were given better opportunities and the help from better piers to become successful. The question, “does success come from chance?” could really go either way. It is all about how you interpret the question. But when it comes down to it, you cannot become successful on your…

I began my nursing career as a licensed practical nurse soon after high school. I always knew that I wanted to become a nurse but I also needed to earn an income as soon as possible. Having a career after one year in school was something that I could handle personally and financially at the time. While in the L.P.N. program I had the opportunity to work in a local hospital as a student nurse. After graduation I took a position within the same hospital and worked there for the next 7 years. I had the opportunity to work on several units during that time, including medical/surgical, cardiac, orthopedics, mother/baby and finally the psychiatric unit. It was there that I found my niche. During that time I got…

For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

In my life, I find that the luckiest thing I ever had was a mother whom really cared about me; the most unlucky thing that has ever happen to me was a heart disease I had since I was young. My dad was worked from morning to evening every day, and my mom was the only one to take care of me. Every day, my mom was busy in between home and the hospital. After I came out of the hospital, my mom was strict and over protective to me because she worried that my heart disease would happen again. Although my mom was only being protective of me, I wanted to get out of my mom’s control, I had things I wanted to do.…

I knew that I would be a good nurse. I was loving, kind, thoughtful, a good communicator, liked helping people, I was caring, and I also liked math and science. The Journal of Nursing Education states, “researchers found the concepts of caring and nurturance were identified as high motivators for choosing nursing” (Williams, Wertenberger, Hames, Gushuliak, 1997). At that time, I was working back office at a Urology office and was going to school. I decided one day that to be able to provide for my daughter if something were to happen between my husband and I that I could always support us. Therefore, my journey began.…
