Lady Macbeth Quotes
Lady Macbeth is married to Macbeth the main character in this play, making her one of the key characters in this play. Lady Macbeth is a woman who lusts for power, authority and control through her husband. She persuades Macbeth into killing Duncan so that he can become king after the incident. She characterizes one of the ongoing thematic elements of guilt throughout the play and this finally leads to her death in the end. The quote "a little water clears us of this deed" is a simple statement made by Lady Macbeth which becomes ironic as the play progresses because the metaphorical "clear water" of truth which she speaks of is never used by either her or Macbeth.

Lady Macbeth can be described as a dark and manipulative character as she urges her husband the naïve Macbeth into killing Duncan by questioning his honor and strength as a man. She manipulates him with such great effect that it causes him to override all his objections, when he still hesitates to kill Duncan she repeatedly questions his

She challenges the natural order of things. "Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood; stop up the passage to remorse." Is a quote made by Lady Macbeth describing her wanting to get rid of her kind feelings of femininity and fill her up with cruelty that of a man so that she can commit the murder herself. Macbeth once implies that his wife Lady Macbeth is a masculine soul inhabiting a female body. Femininity it self is seen to a degree as a source of evil and violence, but they rely more on deception and manipulation. Because of this stereotypical portrayal of women it is argued that Macbeth is a misogynistic play. Furthermore Shakespeare plays on the idea of the natural state of woman and men and of that of nature. These symbols help to reinforce the theme of nature and

"Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it (Act 1, Scene 5, Page 3)." This quote was said by Lady Macbeth and I found it interesting because, this quote is actually being compared to Lady Macbeth instead of Macbeth. The flower is being compared to her by how she treated other people. For example, when the king came to her house/castle, she actually treated him well. Also she was being compared to the serpent because, she actually want to kill the king. So the quote is saying that Lady Macbeth is nice and kind on the outside, but evil on the inside.…

The tyrant king, Macbeth, loses his noble life because of the way he took to get the crown. In fear of losing kingship, “The very firstlings of my heart shall be/ The firstlings of my hand” in order to keep the crown for as long as he can (4.2.163—64) The heart symbolizes togetherness and hands signify allegiance. Macbeth and Scotland are not in correlation anymore because of the evil deed he commits although, earlier in the play, Macbeth was receives praises from the people of Scotland. The king aligns his immoral thoughts with his corrupt deeds without any feeling whatsoever, thus leading Scotland towards her downfall.…

The only way Lady Macbeth can rise in status and gain power is through her husband; she is an ambitious woman in a time where only men profit from ambition. Therefore, she concentrates all her ambition on her husband. This ambition and loyalty is her driving force, but ultimately her downfall. Lady Macbeth is presented as a loyal, ambitious, flawed character that is stronger than her husband and knows it. She has both feminine and masculine characteristics which allow her to literally get away with murder-she is manipulative, ruthless and cunning.…

In the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s, relationship is affected by an act of murder placed upon Macbeth by his wife. Lady Macbeth after this scene shows a very controlling and unappreciative attitude for what Macbeth has done for her, kill King Duncan. She demonstrates in a metaphorical scene described by the Old Man, “A falcon, tow’ring in her pride of place,/Was by a mousing owl hawked and killed” (II. 4. 11-13). This quote is like Lady Macbeth’s unappreciative attitude for Macbeth’s deed for her. She is like the owl that is usual hidden away behind Macbeth, with Macbeth, the falcon who is usually the predator; she attacks him with the responsibility of killing Duncan. By controlling Macbeth, and making him go through with the murder she shows no sign of thankfulness. She tells him to “Go get some water,/And wash [the] filthy witness from [his] hands” after she has scarred him for life (II.…

“What had he done to make him fly the land?" [repeats, louder with cracked voice] “What had he done to make him fly the land?" (page no.) And what did I do to make him flee this land? [shaking head, is emotional] Fearful of Scotland’s happening and future. Oh, Scotland. Your monarchy so heinous, so damned, so feared that your men are fleeting images of the past. Gone with the wind that was a torrent of darkness among the blustery trees. Gone without a thought of kinship; to family nor duty. Lady Macbeth: “Here’s the smell of blood still: all the / perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this / little hand. Oh, oh, oh” (V.I.50-52). Lady Macbeth has become berserk from the murders she assisted in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and she is attempting to wash imaginary blood off of her hands in her sleep, which represents her guilt. This quote is ironic due to Lady Macbeth taunting Macbeth in act II, scene II about when he was hysterical about Duncan’s blood on his hands. She tells Macbeth that a little water will wash off the blood, but now, she is struggling with cleaning imaginary blood off of her hands in her sleep, and despite everything she attempts to do, nothing will clean it off in her mind. This leads to Lady Macbeth becoming…

It is said that fate does not choose it’s own victims, but it’s victims choose their own fate. In the tragedy Hamlet by Shakespeare, it is evident that the tragic hero, Macbeth, chooses his own fate and creates his own downfall. With greed, hubris and mistrust, Macbeth chooses and shapes his own destiny. Macbeth’s greed for power leads to the mistrust of those around him and in the end forms his fatal downfall. If the evil inside Macbeth was not to have overtaken the good, his ending may have concluded otherwise.…

The connection between Lady Macbeth and greed helps the audience understand the driving force of Lady Macbeth’s actions in Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. After Lady Macbeth reads of the witches’ prophecies for her husband, she becomes obsessed with her own greed for the crown. Greed creates a monster out of Lady Macbeth and as she calls to the evil spirits, she says, “unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe with direst cruelty!” (1. 5. 39-41). In this quote, Lady Macbeth is praying to evil spirits to make her not act like woman and to make her as cruel as possible so that she feels no remorse for her actions. She does this because she knows that to quench her greed, she must kill the king. Later on, she talks with her husband about…

Lady Macbeth is an ambitious and ruthless woman who desires power and status. She appears stronger and more callous than Macbeth as she manipulates him to assassinate Duncan. However, as the bloodshed continues, her guilty conscience becomes more affected than Macbeth’s. Unlike Macbeth, who grows insensitive to the murders that he has committed, she descends into madness and (apparently) commits suicide as she becomes less capable to withstand the horrors of her crime.…
