I care about this issue for a couple reasons. The first reason is that I have a lot of family here in Utah, and every winter I see how it affects them. Every winter a few of my family members get sick, and I am pretty sure it is caused by all the smog. The second reason is that I enjoy to go outside in the winter, but I don’t like to breath in all the smog.

For some, air pollution can cause immediate health problems, for others they may not notice problems until later. Just because the air pollution goes away, doesn’t mean there aren’t people suffering from after effects. Salt Lake Valley’s air pollution problem is past the point of being “OK.” It needs to be made a top priority among Utah’s lawmakers. Just waiting for the wind to blow it away doesn’t seem like a good idea anymore. A better idea would be to figure out ways to not create it in the first place.
I am asking that you as the Governor of the State of Utah, make improving our air quality a top priority. The health of the people of Utah When we are in a drought people are told to water every other day. Would it be possible to have driving restrictions during times of inversions? We could also try and work with the business owners in Salt Lake Valley to try and lower work days by 1-2 days a week during times when the smog would get trapped in the valley. Another strategy could be to give Utahns an incentive to not drive, such as lower taxes, or weekly prizes for driving less.
If we could find some way to get people to stop driving, even one less day per week, we could reduce the pollution by about one seventh of all of it.
I thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I appreciate
