#7 of Page 591 “Thinking through the literature”
After reading The Letter From Sullivan Ballou i noticed that it was quite similar to An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge. Both had something to do with the love the men felt for their wives and the reality of knowing that they might be dead soon. This story and letter have the same meaning but put into two different ideas. Farquhar knew was going to be hung for wrong doing and Ballou Knew he had a chance of surviving or dying in war, They both thought about their wives while knowing this. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Farquhar was about to be hung to his death by soldiers. Although he knew he was in a trap he still bravely tried to think for a way out of it to sabotage the soldiers blockade. Farquhar also showed the love of his family. He kept thinking of his wife and how he really wanted to go back home to her, he thought all of this while he was dying. At the end of the story thinking he was still alive he got to see his wife, but he was fantasizing it. It was like his life flashed before his eyes. In The Letter to Sarah Ballou, Sullivan also shows the love he has for his wife. Before he went to war he wrote a letter to her because he knew that he could die in battle and he wanted to let her know how much he love her, but he let her know that if he did die his spirit would come visit her and that he would meet her again. The letter doesn’t only show how much he loved his wife but it shoes how much he loved his county. Even though he saw his death coming he was still willing to fight for it.

Peyton Farquhar is a very flat and static character. This serves to make the central idea of this very powerful need for life more applicable to humans universally, rather than the story of his experience alone. One thing that can be seen about his character though, is that he never appreciated life or took notice of his surroundings as fully as he did after he almost dies. For example, after reaching the shore of the river while being shot at, he noticed how beautiful…

Farquhar was blinded by his enthusiasm at it ultimately resulted in his demise. His actions to tamper with the bridge did not completely end in failure. Many people will push themselves to their absolute limit just to be able to save themselves. In “Zombieland”, Talllhsitty he had to risk his life by going to a game at the carnival they were at and lock themselves in it to cause a distraction so Columbus could save Wichita and Little Rock from being infected by the zombies. In a way, Farquhar’s situation is similar in the way that he had to risk his life in his fantasy land by swimming away and walking home all night to his house to keep himself from being killed. Farquhar was being shot at while he was swimming and had already been injured from being hanged. In both situations though, they had to push themselves to save them from dying. Observation is a process that is constantly performed by all individuals in everyday situations. It is a tool used to gain a better understanding of a situation, although the observer is not always aware that they are in fact performing such an act. In John Updike’s, A & P, the narrator, Sammy, finds himself observing with great detail, three female shoppers in the supermarket in which he is employed. It is through his observations that not only are Sammy’s desires exposed, but he is seen as a character who lives in the moment, and quite frankly grows up in such a short period of time. A close reading towards the bottom of page 218 in the story supports these subjects through its showing of his passion for the three girls, his quick decision making, and his overall condition. In a short matter of minutes Sammy’s true colors are shown and he is left to deal with the consequences.…
