The introduction will give the reader a point of entry to your essay. It should be designed to attract the reader’s attention and give her/him an idea of the essay’s focus. Here are some suggested ways:
1. Using Factual background
You may want to provide some factual background information that is relevant to the question.
Using trends (statistics/figures) is one way of providing facts
2. Use an appropriate quotation
If you are quoting from someone famous or from a literary source, make sure that the quotation is accurate.
3. Use a provoking question
Questions can stimulate thinking in your reader. Used appropriately, they will serve to invite your reader to engage in the discussion with you.
4. Using anecdotes
5. Make a personal comment about the topic (your stand)
6. Stress the importance of the topic
7. Provide various viewpoints or reactions that are relevant
8. Use summary information
A few sentences explaining your topic in general terms can lead the reader to your thesis. Each sentence should become gradually more specific, until you reach your thesis.
Writing the Concluding paragraph
The conclusion brings closure to the reader, summing up your points or providing a final perspective on your topic. All the conclusion needs is three or four strong sentences which do not need to follow any set formula. Here are some suggestions:
1. Summarize/ review the main points
If you choose to summarise the main points in your essay, you should not merely repeat the main points in the form of a list of general points. You should try to offer another angle or restate/rephrase them.
2. Stress the main point of your essay
Emphasizing one key point is often more effective than repeating the same points dealt with previously. You may want to stress the desirability/ feasibility of a particular solution, highlight a certain need or emphasise the urgency
