In Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut uses irony to demonstrate the destructiveness and depreciations of war. Vonnegut incorporated many cases of irony in his book, and they overall enhance the meaning throughout the passage. One of the prime situations of irony took place with Edgar Derby. This poor man had to endure suffering and pain during the course of the war and the firebombing, only to be executed in the end for a meaningless little crime. Vonnegut reveals a bit of this situation in the beginning of the book when he mentions that the "One guy I knew really was shot in Dresden for taking a teapot that wasn 't his" (1). This shocks the reader because…

In the short stories, The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty and The Censors by Luisa Valenzuela, the literary device, irony, was used to create tension and suspense. There are three different types of irony, situational irony, dramatic irony and verbal irony. Situational irony is used when something that wasn’t presumed and is contrasting to what was expected happens. An example might be when a thief’s house was robbed. Another type of irony is dramatic irony. It is used when the audience knows something but the characters don’t. The last type of irony is verbal irony, which is usually simply sarcasm. An example might be saying “Well, this is a nice day” during a…

The short stories “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe and “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne use verbal irony to elaborate the text. Both short stories explain the verbal type of irony. Verbal irony is a situation in which a character says the opposite of what he or she means. Verbal irony is not always shown in the text directly. The reader most of the time has to continue reading until the end of the passage, to actually see if it was verbal irony instead of a different type of irony.…

Verbal irony by definition is when someone states one thing and means another; an incongruity between what is said and what is meant. Twain uses verbal irony in his novel when the band of robbers are discussing the meaning of “ransoming.” Tom says, “Well I don't know, but perhaps if we keep them till they're ransomed, it means we keep them until they're dead.” (Twain 12) All of the boys in the gang immediately agreed upon this definition with Tom. This is an example of satire because Twain is trying to show that though something may be wrong, if society believes it to be true, then it may conform to the “truth.” The verbal irony of this is how Tom is stating what he believes to be ransoming, but not actually knowing what it is to ransom. I believe this shows how ignorant as well as dependent on others out civilization can be.…

Verbal irony occurs when a writer or speaker says one thing but really means something quite different. One example of this type of irony is found in lines 216-217: " Trust me,' the other said, you needn't doubt my word. I wont betray you. I'll be true.'" The rioter is telling the second that he would never betray his friends, yet he is plotting to kill the youngest rioter, whom he promised to defend and treat like a brother earlier on in the tale. Another example occurs when the youngest tells the apothecary that he has a lot of rats he wants to kill. A rat, in the literal meaning of the word, is a furry little creature that humans tend to despise. However, the rats spoken about here by the youngest rioter are his two comrades who are back in the woods, lusting over the gold.…

Verbal irony has a meaning (often contradictory) concealed behind the apparent meaning of a word or phrase in order to get a point across; whereas situation irony is often coincidental and contradictory to the situation at hand in an improbable way. Throughout the story “A Cask of Amontillado”, Edger Allen Poe uses verbal and situational irony to add a touch of macabre humor, build suspense, and foreshadow the ending.…

Two types of irony are presented in the short story The Story of an Hour, situational and dramatic irony. Situational irony is irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected. Dramatic irony is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play or story. Situational irony is expressed through Mrs. Mallard’s actions to her husband’s death in the train accident. When she first heard the news of her husband’s death Mrs. Mallard “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment”(188). It appeared to everyone that she was very sad and upset so she went upstairs to her bedroom; although, she was flowing with excitement. It is natural for a person to be very upset after losing a loved one, so they all understood what was happening.…

Irony is a contradiction between what appears to happen and what actually happens. The type of irony most often used in Animal Farm is situational irony. Situational irony is an event that is opposite what the characters expect. The pigs, who become the leaders of all the animals, give orders to the other animals. This is an example of situational irony because one of the original commandments is “all animals are equal”, but the pigs begin to take charge of the other animals and the animals are no longer treated equally. Another example of situational irony in the book is that the revolution, which was supposed to make the farm more prosperous and all the animals better fed, ended up only benefitting the pigs and the dogs that were in charge. The irony in Animal Farm relates to the quote by John F. Kennedy because the original rebellion against the farmers was violent because the farmers wouldn’t give the animals what they wanted peacefully. Another…

Besides the symbolism in the story, the types of irony used, situational and dramatic irony help emphasize the image of a family dealing with each other while dealing with the phase of death. The family relations as well as the country environment are expressed through these types of irony. They often occur as while the book does deal with serious issues, the family dynamic is a big part of the novel and the people around them get involved with them.…

3) Examples of irony is when the narrator says that “the minds of the king’s subjects are refined* and cultured*” by witnessing the events in the arena. This statement is ironic because a person being slaughtered is neither refining nor cultural. We are also told that the princess finds out that the lady chosen to be behind the door just happens to be a woman the princess was already jealous of. She has to choose whether or not to give her lover to a woman she hates, or to a tiger that will kill the accused person was instantly punished, and there was no escape from the judgments of the king's arena.ent of innocence or guilt up to chance is very ironic.…

Verbal Irony is a device used to convey a contrast between what is said and what is meant. There are a few examples of verbal irony in “The Pardoners Tale.” For example, one of the rioters assured the others that he could “trust [him]” because he “won’t betray [him].” In reality the man asking for his companions trust plans on killing the others and taking the treasure for himself. The old man claims that claims that they “will find death under [the] tree.” When the men arrive at the tree they find gold coins instead of a physical manifestation of death. Finally, when returning to the town he asks the chemist for “poison” to “kill rats.” The younger man plans on using the poison on his brothers, who are like rats because they too plan on acting in greed. These examples show how verbal irony can be used to give ulterior meaning.…
