People think symbols in short stories are ongoing discussion especially that there are indeed symbols in short stories for lots of different reasons. Every story has an object or thing that is important and stands for something else. Symbols are seen throughout everything as long as it has meaning. In the story of Lamb to the Slaughter, written by Roald Dahl. Patrick Maloney got killed by his lovely wife using the lamb. We could sense a certain tinge of irony in the end. The leg of the lamb, the unborn baby and the policemen are three main symbols which play a large role in the Lamb to the Slaughter. Firstly, the leg of the lamb represents revenge and death because Mrs. Maloney can tell something is wrong after her husband comes back home. In disbelief, she listens to Patrick telling her that he is going to leave her. She pretends everything is like usual, so she goes into the kitchen to prepare their dinner and takes out a large frozen leg of lamb. “At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head.” It shows Mary Maloney gets anger and wants to revenge to her husband, so she killed her husband by using lamb which is a murder weapon.
