To progress anywhere in life you have to face your demons “ was once said by famous actor John Noble about Human beings. This is true in life and Literature. For example, Mary Maloney from “Lamb to the Slaughter” a house wife who loves her husband but he thinks differently, or Vera from And then there Were None who was invited and hired to be a secretary but would figure out later what she was really in for, or Hannah from “The Perfects“ who was just babysitting some odd children but then got in lots of trouble. 1.The dark ending was not a typically lottery but throughout the story methods of foreshadowing was used by the author, Shirley Jackson. Characters throughout the story fear the lottery nervously but the dark suspicions are confirmed when “Tessie Hutchinson shouted to Mr. Summers. "You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair!"”(Jackson 5). Tessie instead of being excited for winning the lottery is extremely against winning which confirms that the lottery is nothing to be excited about. Jackson begins the story picturing the town as a the children were playing around as if nothing horrible was about to happen.…

She claims when she arrives that she has just forgotten what day it was and she was at home doing the dishes. This alone seems odd because everyone else in the town could not have forgotten what day it was, as if this was a very important event. It sets her a side from all of the other women. She said, “I remembered it was the twenty-seventh and came a running” (135) Good-natured Tessie Actually desires to come to the lottery, going so far as to run to it, although the rest of the townspeople are subdued, even nervous (Yarmove 244). She is acting very jokingly and not taking anything about this situation seriously she acts as though she does not stand a chance at being the one who will be chosen in the end. At this point us as the readers do not know that whoever wins the lottery is going to be stoned to their death.…

In “The Lottery”, people who draw the slip of paper with a black spot on it will be stoned to death by reason that the villagers maintain a belief that killing someone is of great benefit to the whole village. This kind of human sacrifice is a collective act of murder because people force another person to sacrifice his life innocently for their own interests. As described in the novel, “Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now and she held her hands out desperately”, from which we can see that selfish villagers are murdering Tessie Hutchinson actively. So the lottery is a collective act of murder.…

Betrayal is a very evident theme in Gareth Knight’s translation of Andre Lebey’s work, The Romance of the Faery Melusine. To betray someone is further defined as “being disloyal or false to someone.” (Free Online Dictionary) Although the description sounds like an overall awful and painful experience to be on the receiving end of, when one is betrayed by someone that is not significant to them, the pain pales in comparison to that caused by a betrayal by a family member, lover, or friend. Jungian Analyst James Hillman once wrote “We can be truly betrayed only where we trust-by brothers, lovers, wives, husbands, not by enemies, not by strangers. The greater the love and loyalty, the involvement and commitment, the greater the betrayal.” This quote is proven over the course of the story through the various trials and tribulations of the two protagonists, Melusine and Raymondin.…

There are a myriad of different possibilities for the theme of “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, but to me the story represents the concept of blame. As humans, we sometimes feel a need to target someone as the root of our problems, even if we know that they were in no way involved. This makes us feel better because we are able to take out our anger or stress on someone else. In some cases this person may be picked at random, such as Tessie was in the story. This can at times be unfair to the target, considering that in some cases they may have done absolutely nothing wrong. Tessie speaks for these unfortunate people when she shrieks, “ It isn’t fair, it isn’t right!”…

There are many motives that a person may kill another human. The most common motive for murder in the short stories from Mysterious Circumstances is the wife killing the husband out of anger for something that he does. The three stories that show this are”Lamb to the Slaughter”’, “This Way Nobody Gets the Blame”, and “Invitation to a Murder”. In all of these stories, the wife gets angry with her husband because of something that he does. So instead of being responsible and working it out together, she decides to murder him.…

In the story “The Lamb to the Slaughter” the author wanted to make sure that the reader knew what the violence was and what violent behavior meant. To start off, this story was very violent in my opinion, it had a wife kill her husband with a frozen piece of lamb leg. I think the author of the story was trying to say that betrayal was the reason that she killed her husband.…
