Lamb to the slaughter theme
Theme of lamb to the slaughter The short story I have chosen is lamb to the slaughter by Roald Dahl. I have chosen this short story because I like crime and mystery stories. There are many themes in lamb to the slaughter but the two that have caught my attention are “what goes around comes around” and “two are better than one”. These themes come up more than once in the story and in my opinion are very important to the moral or lesson of the story. The idea of “what goes around comes around, comes around” popped into my head when I was reading Roald Dahl’s short story because at the beginning of the story Mary Maloney the protagonist is waiting for her husband to come home from work .He is late so she keeps waiting innocently not expecting anything to happen but when Patrick finally gets home he tells Mary horrible news that I think was that he was leaving her because he says "And I know it's kind of a bad time to be telling you, bet there simply wasn't any other way. Of course I'll give you money and see you're looked after”. He says this like he isn’t going to be around anymore. He betrays Mary when she least expects it. Not that she would expect it but she is pregnant now so she is even more surprised .So while she is in shock she goes down stairs to get the leg of lamb from the freezer and when she gets back up stairs, there he is with his back turned to her and she betrays him just as he did to her when she least expects it. Also in his time of need because he says “But there needn't really be any fuss” because it would be bad for his job.

The other theme I thought of when reading the story lamb to the slaughter is “two is better than one”. I think this statement is true because Mary kills Patrick with a leg of lamb. Lamb are known as innocent weak creatures and women in most cases are weaker than men but when these two things come together they can defeat something stronger .Patrick was stronger than both Mary and the leg of lamb yet when they worked together they killed Patrick easily. This theme also comes up again possibly as one of the reasons why Mary kills Patrick .Mary was pregnant and I think when she killed Patrick she was thinking ahead for the baby. She was thinking that two parents are better than one. She was mad at Patrick for not realizing that he did not only hurt Mary’s feelings but he was also hurting the future of the baby.

In conclusion the two themes that stood out to me were “what goes around comes around” and two are better than one. Without these themes I think that this short story by Roald Dahl loses its meaning and I think this was the central idea that Dahl was trying to convey to us readers.

I believe that the story with the most powerful moral lesson was The Devil and Tom Walker. The tale of Tom Walker teaches the important message of working hard for items that you desire such as money. Washington Irving, the author, uses the Devil to show all of the bad parts of humanity and how they are brought out in Tom Walker. Additionally, this theme is still very important today. Throughout the story, Tom is a very greedy man that tries to take the easy road through life, and this is shown by him taking a shortcut home.…

“Human beings ,we have darkside's; we have dark issues in our lives . To progress anywhere in life you have to face your demons “ was once said by famous actor John Noble about Human beings. This is true in life and Literature. For example, Mary Maloney from “Lamb to the Slaughter” a house wife who loves her husband but he thinks differently, or Vera from And then there Were None who was invited and hired to be a secretary but would figure out later what she was really in for, or Hannah from “The Perfects“ who was just babysitting some odd children but then got in lots of trouble. I believe that the theme/lesson of the story is that wanting something is different than needing something, because the boy wanted a kill but then he did not need the kill unless his family did not have food then he would need that kill. I believe that another theme of the story could be that when you really need something and you don't get it than don't go and blame it on someone else.…

In the novel Slaughterhouse- Five by Kurt Vonnegut, the story of Billy Pilgrim is used to explore numerous themes regarding life and war. Vonnegut’s appalling war experiences in Dresden guided him to write on the horrors and tragedies of war. All through the progression of the novel Slaughterhouse-Five, the reader is conveyed through the life events of Billy Pilgrim, a character who survives the Dresden firebombing and countless other tragedies. Oddly, Billy discovers ease in the concept that free will is an illusory belief, and that nothing can be done about any of the surrounding misfortunes that happen during his lifetime, or throughout any lifetime. He conveys his opinions and validates them with a claim of alien abduction, and therefore…

The short story that I chose was "The story of an hour by Kate Chopin. The story is about Mrs, Mallards sister Josephine telling her about her husbands death. Mrs, Mallard took the death very hard, and was very depressed for sometime. Her husband Brently was in a railroad accident, and his friend Richard was in the newsroom when he read the list of the men who lost their life. When she found out she wanted to be alone, and asked that no one followed her up into her room. She would stare out the window and just look out at the view. She smells the trees, and hears a peddler screaming out. She is taking the death of her husband very hard.…

Friedan points out that the average age of marriage was dropping and the birthrate was increasing for women throughout the 1950s, yet the widespread unhappiness of women persisted, although American culture insisted that fulfillment for women could be found in marriage and housewifery; this chapter concludes by declaring "We can no longer ignore that voice within women that says: 'I want something more than my husband and my children and my home.'…

Betrayal is not a necessary part of life as evidenced in Roald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter” And Shirley Jackson’s “The lottery”. Lamb to the Slaughter was a story where. Mary Maloney was going to have a son, but the husband had to leave because having a family wasn't going to be good for his job as a detective. Leaving her is an act of betrayal “I know it’s a bad time to be telling you this, but there was simply wasn't any other way. Of course, I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after” (Dalh Pg.2). Betrayal should not be a necessary part of life because the husband wants to leave her and the unborn baby. He wants to leave his family just because of his job. He maybe does this for their protection, but he betraying the family. Mary…

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka showed the value of looking at a story from a different perspective. While I used this idea somewhat in my paper, by writing from the point of view of a chocolate bar, Scieszka wrote The True Story of the Three Little Pigs from a perspective that most people do not consider. By writing from an alternative perspective, the wolf is able to persuade the readers that he is not as bad as most think he is. Although I read this book to plan a lesson for my class, it was instrumental in developing my own…

Mary Maloney, in the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” is not guilty by the reason of insanity. This is when the crime is committed but the person who committed it couldn’t tell if it was wrong or right. During the murder, Mary doesn’t know what she is doing. “Her first instinct was not to believe any of it, to reject it all... When she walked across the room she couldn’t feel anything at all–except a slight nausea and a desire to vomit. Everything was automatic now.” In this quote, Mary is unstable. She doesn’t know what she is doing. After Patrick tells Mary he is leaving her, she goes into shock. She tries to be a good wife but she is breakable. During the murder and right after, Mary is only temporarily insane. She is going to make dinner when Patrick says, “‘For god’s sake. Don’t make supper for me. I am going out!’ at that point Mary simply walked up behind him without any pause and swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down... on the back of his head... The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped bring her out of shock.” In this quote, Mary is at her breaking point. After Patrick says he doesn’t want her to make dinner. Mary goes into shock and, came behind him and swung the frozen led of lamb. She couldn’t tell if it was wrong or right, she just did it. After the crash of the small table, it brought Mary out of shock. Therefore Mary Maloney in the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” is not guilty because she is temporally insane at the scene of the crime so is not guilty for reason of…
