General Information

Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Unlike other Swahili settlements which have been abandoned along the East African coast, Lamu has continuously been inhabited for over 700 years.

Lamu Old Town, located on an island known by the same name on the coast of East Africa some 350km north of
Mombasa, is ancient example of
Swahili settlement in East Africa. There are no vehicles on the island and goods are still moved through the narrow twisted alleyways of the town by donkey. Many of its cultural and architectural treasures – ornate courtyard homes with elaborately carved Arabic doors - date from the period of Omani Arab control from 1698 to the mid 1800s, during its Golden Age after a previous period of Portuguese rule. With a core comprising a collection of buildings on 16 ha, Lamu has maintained its social and cultural integrity, as well as retaining its authentic building fabric up to the present day.
Once the most important trade centre in East Africa, Lamu has exercised an important influence in the entire region in religious,

Authenticity does not mean to stay in the same town, with the same beliefs and practices, for an entire lifetime. Because despite efforts to fight of the changes brought on by globalization, change is inevitable. The fact that Western markets dump cheap clothes making the purchase of traditional silk completely unaffordable is an example that everything changes. Those who wish to preserve the authenticity of cultures view the changes brought by globalization as evil but what we know as tradition began as an innovation, “societies without change aren’t authentic; they’re just dead” (Par…

Tradition could not keep uphold as time went on. Gustav Stickley explains why tradition was not good enough, “To preserve these characteristics and to bring back to individuals life and work the vigorous constructive spirit which during the last half-century has spent its activities in commercial and industrial expansion, is, in a nut-shell, the Craftsmen idea” (123). Tradition was not good enough. People in twentieth all had reputations to uphold. Stickley claims, “That the influence of the home is of the first importance in the shaping of character is a fact too…

When visiting another country, an American citizen may realize that that country’s values are totally different than ours. Each country has their own cultural identity. This identity “is formed in a process that results from membership in a particular culture, and it involves learning about and accepting the traditions, heritage, language, religion, ancestry, aesthetics, thinking patterns, and social structures of a culture.” (Lustig,…

I visited the American History Museum in Washington, D.C; by myself, I have visited this museum numerous times in my life. The museum has so many different exhibits starting with the best exhibit ever, which is closing October 10, 2011 for renovations they are combining two galleries or exhibits to combine the president’s wives inaugural gown’s exhibit and the accessories household goods and other white house objects into one exhibit; at any rate each time a new gown is added I go down to see it. The Ella Fitzgerald memorabilia in the Jazz Treasures Exhibit; is another favorite of mine. The museum is normally sprawling with people but since the summer was winding down and school for most children has begun the crowd was not that bad. At the height of the summer the exhibits are hard to maneuver because of the crowds. But, it is worth the waiting, they recently acquired a 9/11 Exhibit named “Remembrance and Reflection” that will run from September 3-11, 2011. Then there’s the Wizard of Oz Exhibit and all the popular culture memorabilia; such as Farrah Fawcett’s red swim suit she wore in her poster that is now a collector’s…

This is not so much a cultural event, as it is a cultural collection of one of the most unique ways of making art – by using glass. At the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art one can find collections of American art pottery, collections of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century American paintings, graphics, decorative art, and most importantly the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany. I visited this museum located in Winter Park, Florida in close proximity to Rollins College on the 18th of March 2007 at around 2 p.m.…

The most recent cultural event that I have attended was a monster truck rally. This was my first monster truck event and my only expectation was an ample amount of noise. I was not disappointed. There was an arena full of people, mainly families with masses of children, who were all talking, laughing, and screaming, with the excitement of the show. There was great up front and personal experience at the beginning of the evening during the “pit party” where people could walk up to the trucks and their drivers and take pictures. I enjoyed watching the show, but more I took pleasure in watching my daughter’s excitement at all of the antics of the trucks and their drivers.…

The word Eyo also refers to the costumed dancers, known as the masquerade, that come out during the festival. The origins of this observance are found in the inner workings of the secret societies in lagos. It is widely believed that the play is one of the manifestations of the customary African revelry that serves as the forunner of the modern carnival in Brazil. On Eyo day, the mainhighway in the heart of the city (from the end of carter bridge to tinubu square) is closed to traffic, allowing for procession from Idumota to the Iga Idunganran palace. The white-clad Eyo masquerade represent the spirits of the dead, and are referred to in Yoruba as Agogoro Eyo (literally “tall Eyo”). The first procession in Lagos was on the 20th of February, 1854 to commemorate the life of the Oba Akintoye. While Orisa Ogunran is a male Adamu on the other hand is a female. In the manner of a spirit being visiting the earth on a purpose, the masquerade speaks in a ventriloquial voice, suggestive of its otherworldliness; and when greeted, it replies: “Mo yo fun e, moyo fun ra mi”( I rejoice for you, I rejoice for myself). This response connotes the masquerades as rejoicing with the person greeting it for the witnessing of the day, and its own joy at taking the hallowed responsibility of cleansing. If we could take an up-to-date record of staged Adamu Orisha plays in Lagos, it should be close to one hundred celebration since its inception.…

During the summer of 2011 a few friends and I decided to go visit another mutual friend that resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This would be my first trip to Pennsylvania and we all wanted to make the most of it. We decided that we would do some site seeing and just enjoy the change of environment. On June 29th, 2011 we decided that we would start our day by going to breakfast and visiting Fairmont Park. While we were there, we went to visit Memorial Hall. My initial thought of this place was “WOW”! I had never seen anything so beautiful. There was so much to see on the outside, I couldn’t wait to see what was inside.…

“Lentswe” has many connotations in Setswana, one being a large rock and the other a voice. In this context, “Lentswe” is built from the root of the verb “go tswa”, which means to stem out in Setswana. “Lentswe le tswelele go tswela mosola” meaning “as you learn or benefit from Lentswe; continue to be good use unto others.”…
