“Land of the lost” is a short story, which is written by Stewart O'Nan's. It is about a lonely woman, who uses all of her time looking after a dead girl’s body. She lives alone with her dog, Ollie, which tries to help her finding the dead body of the girl.
The main character, who is the lonely woman, whose name is never revealed, is a woman who lives alone because she is divorced and then her two sons moved out. All she has back is her German shepherd, Ollie, which also is her sole companion. The dog, Ollie, is her only object, which is alive, who seems to be just a little interested in her and therefore always keep following her everywhere. In the beginning of the story, the reader gets the feeling, that she is just an ordinary woman; she works in a supermarket as a cashier and she is just living her life. One day she hears about a case about a little girl, she follows the case very nearly, and therefore, in her spare time, she uses her time looking after a little girl, who is disappeared. In the following time, she becomes very obsessed in the case. Actually, she almost changes her house to a real FBI house, because she has pictures and newspaper from the case everywhere, and she notes everything. She seems to be more interested in the case even more that the girl’s parents. (Page 8, line 8-9). Throughout the short story, her obsession gets bigger and bigger. She starts to dig at places where she thinks the body of the little girl could be. She is obsessed with the website, which is the source for new information in the case. It is almost her bible. As told, she starts to change her house to an office, where she documents everything. She does even rearranged her shifts, working nights so she could take advantage of the daylight.
