Landlady Analysis
Imagine you are trapped in a house, and you find out you just drank cyanide. What do you do now? Billy Weaver is in the same position in the short story “Landlady” by Roald Dahl and the video of the “Landlady”. The episode of the “Landlady” has many similarities and differences with the story.
In the short story and the video, Billy Weaver is given many clues that the landlady is crazy, but he doesn’t realize it. The landlady answers the door before Billy can take his finger off the doorbell. This gives Billy a starting clue that she is crazy. Another thing that proves she is crazy is that the landlady taxidermied her pets after they died. This is not very common to have in a bed and breakfast. The author tries to keep the same suspense in

This seemed very weird that she knew Billy was coming before he even rang her doorbell. In the story, the landlady already had the bed made for any guest to stay. Furthermore, in the video, the landlady taxidermies Billy after he dies from the cyanide. The author of the video alters the plot because it gives more suspense to the viewers. In the story, it leaves the reader hanging, but it gives the reader a clue that something was going to happen. In the video, the landlady also taxidermied the two boys who went missing. The author of the video continues the story so the viewers knew what happened to Billy. All and all, the story and the video have many similarities and differences. The short story, “Landlady”, was compared to the video of the “Landlady” with similarities and differences. The landlady gives many clues that she isn’t normal, but Billy isn’t smart enough to realize that she is crazy. There were some events in the video that were different than the short story, but it still has the same plot. I prefered the video because it gave more suspense and it finished the story so everyone knows what happened to Billy Weaver. Not only did the video finish the story, but it also created more

After reading the story “Killings” by Andre Dubus and watching the movie “In the Bedroom,” there are several noticeable differences and a few similarities. Since the movie was derived from the short story, the plot is practically the same throughout. “Killings" is portrayed as a revenge story, whereas “In the Bedroom” it appears to be a love story. As the plot progresses we find out this is not the case at all.…

The second thing that makes this a predictable ghost story is the protagonist Miss Emily. She is a creepy old woman who people know little about. She stays secluded from society and hides herself and most of her home from the public eye. In the beginning of the story you get the impression that she is just a crazy old woman, but you soon realize that she is hiding something from everyone. Also, Miss Emily's attitude towards the public is very standard of most ghost stories. She is very cranky and shows no respect to others. The reader gets an image of an old withered woman who has a bow in her back and walks with a cane.…

    Suspense In The Landlady

Readers enjoy noticing suspense in stories because it hooks them on to read the rest of the story. In “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl, a man named Billy Weaver stays at a bed & breakfast and meets the Landlady. The Landlady is an odd woman. She appears as a kind and generous soul, but on the inside she is an evil and despicable lady with bone-chilling plans for Billy. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the old man had no problems with the narrator. The narrator actually liked the old man, but the level of insanity in the narrator’s head leads him to committing a horrific, gruesome act. Therefore, suspense is depicted in both Roald Dahl’s “The Landlady” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” through the use of symbolism and descriptive…

The main narrator tells the story from a third person point of view. Everything that is known is told from an all knowing voice. While reading the story Ray Bradbury makes it easy to understand that the narrator is more than the talking house. From a part in the story “It sniffed the air and scratched the kitchen door. Behind the door, the stove was making pancakes which filled the house with a rich baked odor and the scent of maple syrup. The dog frothed at the mouth, lying at the door, sniffing, its eyes turned to fire.” (Bradbury 2)This part is interesting because of the use of detail in the senses. The narrator talks to us through his senses and describes the surroundings very vividly. This narrator also gives us certain descriptions that only a person outside of the house could tell us, and since there is no one left to tell us what is happening it must be from the view of a third person…
