“Good writing, Langston Hughes believed, comes out of your own life” (Melter ix). Langston Hughes reflected this in all his poem, short stories, novels, plays, and all other literary works. He wrote in a sixty year time period, becoming the first African American author to support himself- by writing his own experiences (Scholastic). Langston Hughes wrote influential, emotional works of literature due to his early life, early writing and schooling, and his lifestyle.
The date was February 1, 1902 when, in Joplin, Missouri, Langston Hughes was born (Meltzer 3). “His father was James Nathaniel Hughes and his mother, Carrie Mercer Langston” (Meltzer 2). His father walked out on his wife and son shortly after Langston was born. James Hughes wanted to be a lawyer, but even so he could not, because of his color; so he ran until he reached Mexico (Meltzer 3). Hughes’s parents later divorced and his mother travelled frequently to find employment. His mother left him in the care of his grandmother, Mary Patterson Langston, in Lawrence, Kansas (Poem-hunter.com). Meltzer stated in his biography of Hughes “Only seven now, and left without a mother or father, this could have been a terrible time for the boy. But he was lucky in his grandmother, Mary Langston. She was a remarkable woman…” (7). His grandmother had a very fierce sense of pride. She would not work for anyone else. She refused to go into their [caucasian peoples] home and do their work. He moved frequently which led to his insecurity and feeling of unwantedness. He wrote about this after many teachers encouraged him to write his life stories and go to college for it. To conclude, Langston Hughes wrote powerful pieces of literature, by using his stories to influence him, and, without knowing, influenced the world of literature
