Connecting the Context of Work – Eddie Clark In the short stories “Salvation” by Langston Hughes and “Who Will Light the Incenses When Mother is Gone” by Andrew Lam both writer are suggesting uncertainty in family cultural and traditions are believable, honorable. The theme of each authors work builds around family values and ethics. These stories written by different authors similarly present a deeper feeling of values in the family; that direct or pushes individuals in finding or growing into the person they are. Mood, or atmosphere, is the feeling created in the reader by a literary work or passage. Often, the writer creates the mood at the beginning of a work and then sustains the mood throughout. However, there are times when the author will dramatically change the mood to create more passion within the work. There are several other literary devices that were used throughout the works that were assigned during this class session. The following list is a few more literary devices used. According to "www.literary-Devices.com" (n.d.), Allegory is a literary device where characters and events symbolize ideas that are conveyed. Metaphor is a figure of speech in which a comparison is made of two unlike objects. A good use of a Metaphor is in Romeo and Juliet when Romeo says, “Juliet is the sun”. Irony is a literary device that is used to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. An oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two contradictory words or phrases that creates a rhetorical effect. Such as: a wise fool, a beautiful villain, civil war, great depression. Personification is a literary device that attaches human traits and characteristics with inanimate objects and animals. A pun is a word used in a manner to suggest two or more meanings, usually creating humor within the work. Euphemism is the use of a milder or less abrasive form of a negative description instead of its original, unsympathetic form.
