Language In Amy Tan's Essay 'Mother Tongue'
Moving from one's home nation to the United States of America is always a grueling situation but add in the constraints of language and the process becomes increasingly more taxing. Children of immigrants and their parents often face language and communication barriers upon arrival. This is the experience author Amy Tan describes in her essay “Mother Tongue”. Tan illustrates how the language spoken amongst family varies from the language spoken in public. As Tan communicates the language utilized in a child’s environment outside of an educational institution plays a part in how that child performs academically but that does not have to mean that child is below standards. The language used in a child's home can be as beneficial them in school as it can be detrimental. At some point in their lives these children will have to take standardized or achievement exams to assess what they have learned. Having English as a second language or as a language one is not as versed in can pose challenges on the writing, reading and even vocabulary portions of examinations. As Tan recalls from her personal experience “Math is precise; there is only one correct answer. Whereas, for me at least, the answers on English tests were always a judgement call, a matter of opinion and personal experience” (Tan, 181). In her essay Tan talks about how this affected how she did in English in school and on academic achievement examinations. Perhaps there is a correlation between the language one speaks at home and how they perform academically not just in English. English encompasses reading, writing, understanding and speaking; which are necessary skills for every subject. It does well for teachers, colleges, and test creators to investigate and analyze this

The article discusses the different languages of English that Tan had learned and frequently used throughout her life.     One of the major challenges migrants are faced with in Australia is communication barriers in terms or learning and understanding English and preserving their own language. Many migrants are not familiar with the English language when they arrive in Australia, causing language barriers, and have to learn a completely new language in order to be able to communicate. In ‘Learning English’, the main character Tom Cho talks about his experience with English: “When I first arrived in Australia, I did not know a word of English. I began English lesson…but I found it very difficult”. It is very difficult for migrant to be able to learn a new language while adapting to life in a new country. For some migrants, English may be the second or third language, so they have some knowledge of the language; however pronunciation of words is different causing difficulty in understanding and communicating. Migrants are not only faced with difficulties in learning English, but also with keeping and preserving their own language particularly the children of migrants. Many children and teenagers with migrant parents are raised speaking their own language but gradually lose their language skills once they migrate to Australia and start speaking English. Some children do not understand why their parents insist on learning their language while living in Australia. In Relative Advantages of Learning my Language, Amy Choi says: “Though I was raised speaking Chinese, it wasn’t long before I lost my language skills/I didn’t see the point of speaking Chinese. We lived in Australia.” Children or teenagers are surrounded by people speaking English and they do not think it is necessary to learn their language or keep practising and are no longer able to maintain it as it becomes too much of an effort.
