Because when I came to the United States at a young age I faced a lot challenges and hardships but I decided to keep going and stay resilient. One of the challenges I faced was learning the English language. At the beginning when I arrived the U.S I did know any single word in English and that was upsetting and sad to me because everybody in my school knew how to speak it. English language has always been a difficult language to learn for me. But, I try to not give up and I am improving in it through my diligence. Nevertheless, I was dedicated to develop my English skills through learning and studying new vocabulary words and tried to use them in my daily life dialogues. My growth mindset was pushing me every single day to learn and face my obstacles. I also liked to read a lot of books which improved my reading skills and correspondingly gave me new words and notions. Despite, sometimes I do not understand the senses of the words while reading it I used a dictionary. I listened to music and read the lyrics of the songs because I have told that this is one of the effective methods to learn a language. On the other hand, I have taken plenty of workshops, programs on how to progress in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. I know learning a language is hard but what it is harder is to not give up and stay focused on my own work. I have failed a lot of times in the past but once I fail I…

I approached my teacher and asked for help to improve my language skills. My teacher offered to let me switch into the first grade Korean class instead of my current class, which I couldn’t even understand. While at first I was repulsed by the idea, I knew that despite how humiliating the lower class seemed, it was something necessary. As a result, I began learning the basics of Korean in a course with my brother who is four years younger than me. I slowly but surely began to not only improve my fluency but also become more comfortable conversing with my…

Whenever I'd be in class I would feel so lost because it’d take me a while to grasp exactly what was going on while the other students were ahead. This has affected my academic achievement in high school because it has challenged me to put in my efforts to achieve my goal, which has been to be accepted into the college I desire. Considering that it is required for students to pass four years of English, my path to succeeding that has been rough, but I’ve managed to work through it and give it my all. The language barrier has allowed me to think differently in the sense of being able to think in one language and say it in another. Unfortunately, that’s where my problem has been. Since I am bilingual, some times whenever I want to express or explain something it’s really hard for me to figure out how to put my thoughts into words and make it clear enough to where people understand me. Now referring back to my troubles in English class, I think that because it’s been tough for me to explain myself, it has played a part in the lack of strength in my writing. However, overtime I believe that because this has been such a challenging issue for me it has also been my motivation to keep on going even though it may seem too difficult at first. Reflecting upon myself, I can certainly say that I’ve improved my English comprehension and speech skills compared to my past…
