Overview:
A laparoscopic salpingostomy is a surgical incision into a fallopian tube. This procedure can be done to repair a damaged pipe or to remove an ectopic pregnancy (one that occurs outside the uterus) .Causes:
The causes
The fallopian tubes are the structures that carry a mature egg from the ovaries to the uterus. These tubes, which are about 4 in (10 cm) in length and 0.2 (0.5 cm) in diameter, are located on the upper outer sides of the uterus, and open into the uterus through small channels. And 'inside of the fallopian tubes that fertilization, the union of an egg and a sperm, takes place.
Diagnosis:
The diagnosis of salpingostomy or other defects of the fallopian tubes can be done surgically, using a laparoscope …show more content…
to view the fallopian tubes. Alternatively, a hysterosalpingogram can be performed, in which the uterus is filled with a dye and an x-ray is taken to see if the dye flows through the fallopian tubes.
Procedure:
Regional or general anesthesia may be used. Often a laparoscope salpingectomy (a hollow tube with a light on one end) is preferred in this kind of surgeries, which means that the incision can be much smaller and much shorter recovery time.
In this procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision just below the navel.
The surgeon inserts a short tube in the abdomen cable and, if necessary, into carbon dioxide pumps to move out of the way intestines and organs better view. After a double broader tube is inserted from one side to the laparoscope, another small incision on the other side over which other instruments can be injected. After the operation was completed, the tubes and instruments are withdrawn. Small incisions are sutured and slight scarring.
In the case of a pelvic infection, the physician makes a horizontal incision 4 to 12 cm long in the abdomen right upper side the pubic hairline. This allows the doctor to remove the scar tissue. (Alternatively, a surgeon can use a vertical incision from the pubis toward the navel, although this is less common.)
Possible Complications:
All the surgery, especially with general anesthesia, involves some risks, such as the risk of scarring, bleeding, infection and reactions to anesthesia. Pelvic surgery can also cause internal scarring that can lead to discomfort years later.
Average recovery period:
The average recovery period is 3 weeks after surgery.
What should you ask your Doctor:
1. Why is the procedure needed?
2. What are my alternatives to this procedure?
3. Is there other treatment options available based on my current medical
condition?
4. Should I get a second opinion?
5. Are there any possibilities of complications due to my medical history?
6. Are there any chances of drug interactions with my current medicines?
