Lara Littman's Backlash
Overweighted Lara Kelly was bullied and depressed in Middle school. Now a sophomore, and 30 pounds lighter, her life are finally turning better. She made cheerleading team, has new friends, and a hot boy from a different school likes her on Facebook. Her ex-best friend Bree, who ended their friendship two years ago when Lara’s depression for being overweight got in the way, she is mad for not making the cheer team. If Lara thought of all the consequences that could occur by accepting friend request Christian on Facebook, her life would have turned differently. Sarah Darer Littman wrote a book called BackLash that shows us to think before we act. Lara one of the protagonists in the novel has blond hair and is overweight at the beginning of the story. Lara was really depressed because kids used to call her names like “Lardo” and “Lardosaurace.” The depression caused Brianna to split away from Lara. The separation of Lara and Brianna affected their younger siblings Liam and Sydney. When Lara and Brianna were friends Conners and Kellys used to hang out every weekend. Mr. Conner and Mr. Kelly made tree house together for their kids to hang out but, …show more content…
Lara also started school, at her school, everyone was nice to her, even people who called her names. At a football game, Lara had to perform cheerleading. She saw Brianna in the bathroom. Brianna had died her hair black. Lara wanted to ask why she made a fake Facebook profile but, instead, she said “Hi,” and was being nice to her. At the football game Lara’s friends “Luis” asked Lara to the homecoming dance. She rejected him at first, but after being jealous of Sydney and Liam’s relationship she decided to go with him. The book would be changed if Brianna thought all the consequences cyberbullying to then she wouldn’t have to move

    An Edison Research shows that over 70% of the nation has a social media profile as of the first of January this current year. The Pew Research Center published results of a survey that shows 92% of teens, identified as 13-17 year olds in this survey, go online daily. From this research we can see how affected young adults and teens are affected by social media and although social media affects all sorts of people, it seems that social media affects young adults and teens to a greater extent. In a survey published by the National Crime Prevention Council, around 40% of teens were cyber-bullied. The social issues teens face differs from feeling insecure about themselves to feeling pressured about always looking their best. Some find the use of a “selfie” as empowering while others use it as a measure to determine their worth by how many like or hearts they receive for that “selfie”. Although the online world manages to a produce solid amount of social hardships, the real world produces still produces its share of social issues. Face-to-face bullying is still common and teens are still facing the social issue. While bullying, whether online or in person, seems to result with more deaths in suicides than actual happy endings, there are those who still have endured their share of social problems to become happier people. Some of these people have led themselves to being idols that teens admire such Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato.
