she does not do her homework, which leave her behind the other children in her class. In the movie as she gets older she shows her true interest and talent for music. Lara wants to share her love of music with her parents but since they are deaf it makes it difficult. This is why her father, Martin, does not respect her decision to play the clarinet. Lara as an individual wanted to pursue her musical career so she did by going to live with her aunt and uncle in Berlin.
After living in Berlin Lara’s individual identity was obvious.
She wanted to be a musician. Lara had a passion for music and although she was very talented already she continued to practice and get even better. Her aunt Clarissa and her music teacher encourage her that she should take her talent further and study professionally. At the group level of identity it was very important for Lara to become a student and study music at the conservatory. Finally at the universal level Lara’s relationship with her parents is the most important. All she wants is for them to support her in her music career but it is very hard for them considering their deaf. Her relationship with her parents also takes a hit when her mother dies in a bicycle accident. Eventually her father comes around and shows up at her entrance exam to watch her perform and tries to understand her passion for music even thought being from the deaf culture makes it
hard.
The deaf culture is very important throughout the movie because Lara’s parents, Martin and Kai are deaf. Lara is their only translator at home as well as out in public. Once her sister, Marie, is born she wonders if she will also be deaf. It turns out that Marie is not hearing impaired so she can also become a translator to help her parents when Lara goes to live with her aunt and uncle in Berlin. Being a part of the deaf culture is not always easy. They are sometimes made fun of and disrespected. The music culture is also very important. It has been seen though the childhood of Martin and his sister Clarissa and is then passed on to Lara when she is a child and she continued to pursue it throughout her life.
There are some group norms established in the movie. An overt norm would be that Lara was expected to attend school regularly. Her schooling was suffering because she had to leave early to help her parents with translating. The most obvious covert norm was Lara and her parents speaking to each other through sign language. Another covert norm that stood out was that when Lara entered a room she flicked the lights on and off a few times so her parents would know she had come into the room. These norms are the rules the family shares and follows.
Throughout the movie Lara struggles with her relationship between her mother and father. Although it is hard to grow up with deaf parents she manages to respect their culture and learn their language so she can be the most helpful. Lara grew up with many responsibilities as a young child she didn’t get to enjoy things she wanted very often. Once Lara discovered her love for music it was like she found her identity she was born to be a musician.
