She built social-emotional awareness and empathy in an increasingly interconnected world by being a co-founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. The goal of this non-profit organization was to design programs to protect, preserve, and restore the gift of sight to people all around the world. Patricia also maintained a positive mindset and belief in the value of persistence in learning by never giving up on her invention of the Laserphaco Probe. It took her about 8 years to patent her device. In that time period she could have given up, but because she was persistent in learning she was able to provide many people with sight.
