The ordeals of the two nobles in Normandy France of a true story of crime, scandal and trial by combat in Medieval France. Knight of Jean de Carrouges IV and Squire of Jacques Le Gris battle each other to the death. Who would prevail from this last duel?
The story beginnings in hundred years war between France and England. Sir Jean de Carrouges III, who fought many battles and went to several campaigns against the English. His son Jean de Carrouges IV was born as warrior, and in 1380, he held the rank of Squire whom he controlled four to nine squires under his command. Since Count Robert did not leave any heir, Count Pierre of Alencon brother of Count Robert, now who he controllers his lands and castle. One of Jean’s fellow chamberlain in Count Pierre’s court at Argentan was another Squire, Jacques Le Gris. He was about the same age as Carrouges. Two Squires were good old friends; their friendship had formed at the service of the Count of Preche. They were both eager to prove their worth in loyal service to their new lord. Jean de Carrouges and of Jacques Le Gris both family held noble rank. Their friendship grew stronger when Jean made Jacques a god father of his first son. This shows great trust and respect to Jacques. Soon after Jean de Carrouges suffered a calamitous loss, his wife fell sick and died. Also, his only heir passes away; the sudden death of his two loved ones. He was mourning for the family member he lost, and he was in terrible despair. In 1379, he joined the royal campaign under admiral Jean De Vienne; he joined to risk his own life in battle. Knight of Jean de Carrouges IV and Squire of Jacques Le Gris was ready battle each other. Before the duel began, they had make oath and last words to god and king of France. They had bathed, and on the eve of the duel they both had to pray and confess their sins. After washing, praying and eating, each man was carefully preparing for the duel. They both had to have certain weapons to duel each other. Also, priest had make Jacques a knight to have equally noble fight. When they both got ready, they had given oath to the king. When they both finished their oath to the king Jean went to see Marguerite one last time since Marguerite was also in danger, because if Jean loses Marguerite would be burned alive for false information. After giving her good bye kiss he was ready to battle Jacques to death. The battle started out with Jousting battle, they both were good at jousting, hitting each other with such power with their joust. The battle continued on Jacques attacked him from the back and killed his horse. Jacques was on his horse and kept attacking him with his ax with such force while Jean was on the ground. Jacques went back with the charge but Jean lunged forward and drove the lance point of his ax into the horse’s belly and killing the horse. Now, both men were on foot, and both drew their swords. Jean charged first to attack Jacques, they both fought furiously but Jacques saw an opening and he lunged forward and drove the
