In the foreground, there are people queuing outside and waiting for the shop to open. Scenes of waiting in queues were very common during the wartime in England. In this line of customers there are elderly people and also middle-aged with their children. The shop is on the left hand-side of the painting, it has a placard with the name of the greengrocer’s shop and beneath it there is the number of the street which is significant because it’s a reference to the place where the scene is happening and where J. S. Lowry lived. Most of his work are scenes of life in Pendlebury and its surroundings (Greater Manchester).…

It may at first glance appear that this painting is all jumbled up but you would be wrong. Reuben precisely placed each item in this painting. This style of painting is called Baroque. Baroque basically means elaborate and extensive detail used in a painting. Reubens avoids stiff lines and boring geometric forms to create life and motion in his painting. Fourteenth century Europe could be best described as the “Dark Ages” of Europe. Between 1300 and 1450, Europe experienced series of catastrophic moments from economic difficulties, plague, war to increased crime and violence. The Black Death caused Florence to lost between one half and two-thirds of its 1347 population of 85,000. War also played an important part in Europe’s history. The Hundred Years’ Year (1337-1453) brought social and economic difficulties to both France and England. In France, hundred and thousands of acres of farmland were destroyed turning France into a shamble. Although the war provided unusual opportunities for all social groups, when the war ended knights and nobles went back…

You look to the left and see a man bending down receiving the newspaper or to the right to the man standing beside him with his hands in his pockets with a despair/sorrow look. This man possibly feels this way because there is no one to accompany him for the night or he’s out of money. “The Harbor of Dieppe” is an enormous painting, measuring a 68x88 (inches) rectangle. The painting represents a busy French port in the city of Dieppe. Numerous ships are docked along the shore and people represented in the painting are all busy, getting ready to accomplish all of the work that the day light brings. On the right side of the picture plain, there are hundreds of people lined up along the docks. Some can be seen trying to get their goods loaded onto the ship and others trying to get a glance at the merchandises that has arrived from around the world. The two women on the right foreground are working together to bring goods out from the ships and into the city; they seem to be unloading cooking dishes, picture frames and other valuables. Not all characters in the painting are busy at work, some are just sitting in the balconies of building and just staring down at the crowds that gathers outside. A few woman in the painting are just having fun trying to steal the working guys attention. For example on the first ship in the picture plain, there is a young lady, playing with her feet in the water and the guy above her working in the ship is flirting with her. Design and architecture was also an important part of medieval European culture. The plague tore at the lavish artistic European lifestyle in another very evident way. It halted the production of intricate, aesthetically pleasing architecture. It is known that, “because of the Black Death and the recession the building industry was also affected. Building in the medieval Europe would never be as extravagant as in the century before the Black Death. If the Black Death did indeed have a direct impact on landowner building practices, it was chiefly in the area of self defense.” The plague pressured people to begin designing more practical, stronger buildings that would be able to protect them from the inescapable wrath of the Plague. This lead…

In the piece of art are visible buildings ,probably houses that one day were brightly white and from a wealthy family , viewer can infer that because of the size and structure of the homes. Now it are cover of rust, the windows are broken, and it gives the impression that are abandoned. Seems that the buildings are becoming smaller and less clear as they are more far from the front of the picture, kind of a 3D effect to give the touch of reality .Like almost every single house in Venice , it is located besides a canal , where the boats, best known as gondolas are floating without a direction neither a passenger , except for two, that carry a male each. One of them is Sargent but is difficult to identify which one. The one in the boat at the left is sitting, watching the other man at the left , he is laying across the gondola, observing to no specific point, thinking. Both of the persons have hats and blue clothing , seems to be foreigners. There are old poles lining at each side of the canal, waiting to be painted and repaired, in order to shine again and give light to what once could had been a beautiful, elegant, colorful and full of live neighborhood. The sky is gray, drab, giving a sense of mysterious, like it is about to rain. It transfer a feeling of sadness, depression,…

Before we begin to look at the painting that I have chosen let us first learn a few things and key terms. For this paper we were asked to explore the text, context, subtext and modern significance of a work of art from the time period we are studying. So I feel it is best if I explain to each of you the definition is of these three things. According to our text book, the text is, “any primary source refers to its medium (that is, what it is made of), its form (its outward shape), and its content (the subject it describes).” The word context is used to, “describe the historical and cultural environment. The determine the context, we ask: in what time and place did the artifact originate?” Lastly, the term subtext refers to, “its secondary and implied meanings. The subtext embraces the emotional or intellectual messages embedded in, or implied by, a work of art.” (The Humanistic Tradition, 5th Edition, Preface).…
