Literary Essay on Lather and Nothing Else There are many choices we must make in life, but it is the ones that we make under pressure that reflect our true personality. It is this message which Hernando Tellez teaches the reader in his short story, Lather and Nothing Else. Whether the main character is making a choice between his chosen career and his political views, or his level of commitment to his multiple roles, or even his personal sense of honor against others opinion of him, he wound up showing his true self and staying true to himself.     Secondly, the barber would have been a coward because he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. He was well aware that he would have to run and thus he made a statement, “I would have to flee, leaving all I had behind, and take a refuge far away” (51).     Ioannides and Tellez both talk about how altered our decisions become at times of war, and how the unexpected conquers the expected and it is then that the truth of one’s identity (protagonist) is unveiled. In Gregory “When the order came, it was like a thunderbolt” (Paos Ioannides 3), the author wishes to emphasize on the irony of the friendship of an inmate and the soldier, and how he gets to choose between friendship and duty to his country.     In the book, being a barber is the protagonist’s profession and desire. I can connect this to myself because I have a strong desire to play the piano 6 years ago, and I continue to do it today. This shows the similarities between the story and the experience in myself, by showing the type of passion that you are interested in and doing an activity that you are proficient in.     The definition of a coward is one to show fear, the barber shows he is a coward by being afraid, seconding guessing himself, and showing weakness.
