The barber has a hard time deciding if he wants to kill Torres or not. The barber had the blade on his neck for most of the time and internally says”He deserves it. Or does he? No! No one deserves…” (Tellez 3)The barber is still debating if the barber wants to kill Torres. The author uses internal conflict to show the battle between himself and his own actions. The barber does not want to be a murder and he wants to be himself, a barber. Also, the barber says that “Murderer or hero? My fate hangs on the edge”(Tellez 4) The barber has a hard time deciding with himself either if the barber wants to kill the captain. The barber also thinks about the outcomes of killing Torres. Suspense is created in the last part when the barber has no idea what he would do. And finally, decides to not kill Torres and just be a barber.
The suspense was created throughout the story and two of the many techniques that were used in the short story was foreshadowing and internal conflict. The author created suspense to give a feeling to the story. There are a mood and tone for every story and needs to set up a feeling. The feeling of tension and anxiety can bring a more lively picture of the story. The author uses foreshadowing out of all techniques because it shows the best way of expressing anxious anticipation and pressure. It serves a purpose to all readers who want a more thrilling story.
