Laurie Hernandez's Life And Accomplishments
American Olympic gold medalist, Laurie Hernandez is on the cover of my Wheaties box. Though only being 17 years old, she has accomplished so much in her lifetime, such as placing in the Olympics and being the youngest contestant to win the television competition, “Dancing with the Stars.” Laurie has had to overcome injuries that would break other teens of her age, she is a hardworking, determined, and respectable athlete. She is continuing her Olympic career and will continue to be a fit role model for children all over. Having three kids, Anthony and Wanda Hernandez have supported their children’s sport interests for years. Each kid was athletic from a young age. Laurie was born June 9, 2000 in New Jersey, being the youngest of the kids. She signed up for gymnastics at the age 6, where she would meet her coach and manager, Maggie Haney. At age 9, Laurie attended and shined at multiple USA Gymnastic development camps. In 2014, Laurie was unable to compete due to a dislocated kneecap injury and a fractured wrist. Returning a year later, Laurie performed in four competitions where she medaled in every event and received an all-around gold. She is one of only a handful of Latinas to represent the U.S. Olympic Team is 1936. Hernandez is also the youngest member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. In the Olympic Games in Rio, she had scored a 15.100 on the vault, 15.233 on the balance beam, and 14.833 on her floor exercise which helped lead the team to gold. On this team named “The Final Five”, included Biles, Douglas, Raisman, Kocian, and Hernandez, the third American women’s gymnastics team to win gold.
