The claimant, Morgan, sustained severe physical injuries caused by an accident which occurred as he was driving a two person bobsled during a national championship race. Morgan was an experienced rider who had been bobsledding for over 20 years and had competed in the US Olympics. He also testified that he was familiar with this particular course and had raced on it many times prior to this race. The area where the accident occurred was recently reconstructed and substantially modified but was approved by FIBT, the regulating authority of the sport. Morgan brought a lawsuit in the Court of Claims stating that the design of the exit ramp was the cause of his accident and injuries. The defendant, State of New York, which owns and operates the mountain, stated that the athlete assumed the risks of a dangerous sport and was primarily to blame for the accident.…

Few ever expected her to occupy this position. Canadian Tire had, perhaps not surprisingly, always been a man's world. Martha's father, Alfred Jackson Billes (always referred to as A.J.), was the junior partner to his elder brother, John William (J.W.), when they bought a service station at the corner of Gerrard and Hamilton Streets in Toronto in 1922, selling and repairing a new product known as "balloon" (pneumatic) tires. The empire had expanded to more than 100 stores, and the two brothers had become very rich, by the time Martha Gertrude Billes was born, in September,…

Two brothers, Édouard and André Michelin, ran a rubber factory in Clermont-Ferrand, France. One day, a cyclist whose pneumatic tyre needed repair turned up at the factory. The tyre was glued to the rim, and it took over three hours to remove and repair the tyre, which then needed to be left overnight to dry. The next day, Édouard Michelin took the repaired bicycle into the factory yard to test. After only a few hundred metres, the tyre failed. Despite the setback, Édouard was enthusiastic about the pneumatic tyre, and he and his brother worked on creating their own version, one that did not need to be glued to the rim. Michelin was incorporated on 28 May 1888. In 1891, it took out its first patent for a removable pneumatic tyre which was used by Charles Terront to win the world's first long distance cycle race, the 1891 Paris–Brest–Paris.…
