DOT Major Functions:
1. Supervise the activities of the government.
2. Effect the removal of unnecessary barriers to travel.
3. Formulate an integrated program
4. Review all tourism project
5. Represents the Government
6. Accredit travel agencies, tour operators and tour guides.
7. Classify and accredit the hotel, resorts and other lodging facilities.
8. Perform such other functions as may be provided by law.
Philippine Tourism Authority
Presidential Decree 564 (October 2, 1974) – was enacted revising the charter of the Philippine Tourism Authority which was originally created under Presidential Decree No. 189 dated May 11, 1973. Strengthening the PTA was needed.
Travel Tax is a levy imposed by the government on individuals. PTA’s main source of income
OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
National Parks Development Committee(NPDC)- was created originally as Executive Committee on January 14, 1963 later designated as NPDC, for the development of the Quezon Memorial, Luneta and other national parks. The NPDC remained under the office of the president.
National Historical Institute(NHI)- Continues to be the lead government agency where matters of history and culture are concerned.
Presidential Decree No. 260 dated August 1, 1973 – has declared certain sites, churches and places as national shrines, monuments, and /or landmarks, and placed their preservation, restoration and/ or reconstruction under supervision and control of the NHI in the collaboration with the DOT.
