Safeguarding Booklet

There are many different types of abuse, here is a summary.

Physical Abuse – Forms of abuse involving force, ie hitting, restraint.

Sexual Abuse – Any from of sexual contact, which has not been consented to. In the carer service user relationship, even if consent has been given by both parties abuse can take place as the carer is in a position of power.

Emotional Abuse – All other forms of abuse involve emotional abuse but purely emotional abuse takes the form of humiliation, bullying insults etc.

Financial Abuse – This can take many forms, from directly stealing someone’s money to influencing how they use it for your own gain.

Institutional Abuse – Taking away freedom and individuality from service users, running a service for the convenience of the staff as opposed to the service users.

Self Neglect – Very difficult to draw the line between self - neglect and informed personal choice sometime. We could see an individual not brushing their teeth as self - neglect but they may be expressing an informed choice. Important to discuss choices with the individual rather than imposing what you believe to be correct.

Neglect – Not meeting the care needs of an individual, ie not providing enough food or drinks, ignoring incontinence.

In general if someone’s behaviour/mood changes significantly it’s always good practice to keep potential abuse in mind as a contributing factor.
