Leader, Leadership And Communication Analysis
Leader, leadership and communication are three terms that have been assigned various definitions by scholars. In essence, the leader is the individual who directs behaviour of other individuals towards achieving a common goal. Leadership in relation to communication can be defined as a “behaviour enacted through communication.” It can be observed how subtly Holladay and Coombs managed to insert the communications aspect into the leadership definition. In the present context, dynamic work environments with more educated employees signify the need for leaders to lead by negotiation. Therefore, it becomes necessary to closely examine the link between leader’s best performance and effective communication.
From a personal standpoint, the performance of a leader is reflected in the extent to which followers are satisfied as well as how successfully they complete the communicated tasks. A study conducted by Sharbrough et al (2006) identified that a leader’s communication competence and the level of subordinate satisfaction were closely related. After the 9/11 attack airlines were running at a loss and most employees were made redundant. Every activity conducted by leaders requires the involvement of communication. Surely, other factors like leadership traits, style and emotional intelligence directly influences a leader’s performance but without proper communication a leader definitely fails. It can be seen how diligently the Sri Lankan president works towards the empowerment of underprivileged people.
