Nelson Mandela Leadership

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”
Nelson was the first black President of South Africa and he was one of the most important figures that helped end apartheid in S.A. He believed in consensus. He used a general feeling to empower the people and motivate them. Nelson was tolerant and persistent. For an end to apartheid he was put in jail for 20+ years, but nevertheless he never gave up on his main purpose.
Nelson’s leadership lessons:
1. Your vision in life must be for greater good.
2. Not everyone will support your vision.
3. You need to fight for your vision.
4. Lead with the knowledge that nothing is “Black or White”
5. Quitting is leading too.
6. Be humble about your strengths and honest about your flaws. * "When you want to get a herd to move in a certain direction you stand at the back with a stick. Then a few of the more energetic cattle move to the front and the rest of the cattle follow. You are really guiding them from behind. That is how a leader should do his work"

There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. Leadership as a concept or notion lends itself easily to myriad definitions. Manning and Curtis (2012) describes leadership as the social influence that results from the capacity to initiate ideas and deeds that others can follow. A leader often stands in front of others and they follow in his footsteps. According to Hopen (2010), “leadership is the capacity to guide or direct others” (p.4). To Fulwiler (2005), leadership is the ability to make people do what they normally would not do or go to places they normally would not go. Leadership can also be defined as the…
