1. In Self-Assessment and Your Right to Lead: A Leadership Primer by Gene Kamena, he explains a model called the Right to Lead Assessment Model (RLAM). The whole purpose of the RLAM is to help leaders provide themselves with self-assessments on their leadership qualities. Now in this model are important characteristics of leadership. Now why all of these are important I believe that competence, personality, and trust are among the most important of them all.
2. First would be competence. In the reading competence is described as; the actual state (level) of skills and abilities you possess. I think competence is important so you as a leader know what you can handle or would be too much to take on and control or lead. Now let’s not get this confused with “stretching” yourself as a leader and taking risk. One speaker once told me leadership is all about taking risk. You as the leader just need to simply determine if the risk is worth the reward or if the risk is too high for the reward.
3. Second is Personality. Your personality is developed by your DNA, environment, and experiences. The easiest way to define personality is simply as a person’s delivery system. What I mean by delivery system is the way they act in certain situations and how they communicate and complete tasks in different situations. I believe personality is one of a kind for every leader. Yes two leaders may have some similarities but no two leaders will have the same exact personality. I think personality is a key to leadership because for one it’s never the same. Everyone is different. With interacting with different personalities you as a leader can see many different types of leading and can pick and choose from each one what you like and what works for you. As leaders we are all always learning, it never will stop. For that reason along I believe personality is a huge key to leadership.
