Leadership Essay
Throughout the novel “We were soldiers”, it shows exactly what combat leadership is all about. I believe that there are many NCO’s and Officers but fewer True combat leaders. The effectiveness of leadership throughout the Battle of IA Drang is remarkable and inspirational. Its shows how a strong leader is important when dealing with hard choices, adversity, diversity and being in a position where people’s lives are in stakes of your decisions. My favorite quote from LTC Moore is, “I can 't promise you that I will bring you all home alive. But this I swear, before you and before Almighty God, that when we go into battle, I will be the first to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to step off, and I will leave no one behind. Dead or alive, we will all come home together. So help me, God.” To me that show that your leader is ready and is willing to go to war no matter what with his soldiers. To me those are words that will make the soldiers have the same attitude going in to battle. There are many forms and ways to be a leader, one of the main leadership definitions that I identified was authentic leadership that demonstrates initiative. You go first, and lead the way. You don’t ask others to do what they are unwilling to do themselves. Instead, they lead by example.
We Were Soldiers revolves around a leader, Lieutenant Colonel Hal and his unit, who are set for their first battle of the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Colonel Moore is commander of the first Battalion, 7th Cavalry regiment, the same regiment that was fatefully commanded by General George A. Custer in the 19th Century. General Custer and his men were slaughtered at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. In the story Lieutenant Colonel Moore manages to achieve the impossible when despite his being outnumbered by the enemy, he refuses to give in and eventually proves triumphant when he forces the Vietnamese troops to vacate their headquarters.
