Our trip to Texas Southern was overall very interesting. We briefly visited with Dr. Thomas Freeman and learned about his long, incredible life, but before that, we walked some of the halls containing mural after mural. Many are elaborate paintings of various elements of the black lives matter movement. Others, like the police brutality mural, have connotations to today’s world and the injustices African American people face on a day to day basis. The mural that caught my eye, though, was the one depicting one mule on a vast stretch of land which, Mr. Ford said, is a symbol of the ‘one mule and forty acres’ the enslaved families were meant to receive after being emancipated. How would my subordinates describe me as a leader? I have never seemed to think as myself as a leader however, since I have been in the INANG my subordinates would describe me as a good mentor and team builder. I like to work close by those underneath me and be ready to jump in and help when there is an issue. I would also be described as a good listener. When I was a senior airman I was asked by a colonel: If I could change something with our leadership, what would it be? In the back of my mind I thought that was his job, but I answered anyway. I told him that there could be better communication with everything from the hangar to the back shops. Taking ENES 317 has exposed me to lot of knowledge such as one leadership/Management skills, personality types, approaches to problems and decision making. In the past, I believed that leadership was a quality that could be learned and taught, but I also thought that leadership would best fit people with some personal trait such as charisma or personality of an extrovert people. The project I chose to demonstrate my leadership on was to go around the Frostburg community picking up recycling and then dumping it in a local landfill. I first chose this project to work on because I thought, how could I help Frostburg and give back to the community? By recycling products and going green, these products can eventually be reprocessed and re-used without having it go to waste. I mainly decided to collect recycling to maintain and keep Frostburg clean and liter free. It establishes a healthy environment for locals, students and staff around the area. Going green and keeping the community environmentally friendly is highly stressed around the world today.
