My score for the assessment at the end of chapter four was 50 for task and 46 for relationship style. The assessment solidified what I already knew, I am more task-oriented than relationship-oriented and I have definitely seen this when it comes to my interaction with my subordinates. I manage a team of five Community Assistants and their role comprises of being my sales team. I am definitely more prone to take on task-oriented style as I am focused on getting the task completed.

This was my very first experience taking an assessment for a job, as in the past, I had done them for classes or programs that I was applying to. Based on all the previous assessments I had completed, I was already aware of my learning and leadership style. I have the tendency to not have enough confidence in myself to make decisions without a lot of input from others and permission seeking. My mentor used to be my boss and he told me that while I was ultimately one of his best program directors he had ever supervised; my journey to the directorship was exhausting and sometimes a bit frustrating for him. He stated that I would ask questions about every minute detail because I seemed to fear making a mistake. He said that for me to become a leader I need to believe in myself, have confidence that I am capable and I do know what I am doing. He told me that until I learn to trust myself, I am going to have a difficult time getting others to trust me as a leader. He also told me that I have the capacity to become a transformational leader, which is my goal, but I have to let go of the fear, and allow myself to make mistakes. According to him, mistakes teach valuable lessons, and the way I react to the mistake builds…

My family is my biggest distraction. All of their tasks and activities come before mine, and always have. I also love to help other people, and I say yes to everyone and everything. It’s exhausting sometimes, and even though I realize that I shouldn’t say yes to everyone all the time, I still do. Then I struggle with completing “MY” tasks that must get done either for work, school, or church. I procrastinate, and find myself in a tailspin at the end of the week or just before a deadline. I hate that I do it, and say to myself all the time that I will never do this again, and the next week or month it happens again.…

Since it has been my experience that there are exceptions to rules, I believe that leadership style assessments are useful if they are coupled with other data, such as independent assessors. For example, this week I completed a self -assessment regarding my leadership style from our course textbook, Leadership Theory and Practice, which indicated I am strong in both task and relationship skills. While I mostly agree with this outcome after reflecting on my past leadership accomplishments and activities, I wondered if others who know me would agree with the assessment. Then, I also wondered how bias I was in completing the assessments. As a matter of fact, according to Northhouse the purpose of the assessment was to present a general profile of leader skills. (Northhouse, 2016).…
