Sheryl Sandberg is the chief operating officer of Facebook and an activist. Sandberg was born in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1969, however, she grew up in North Miami Beach Florida . She studied economics at Harvard University, which led to her feminist perspective on economic inequality. Due to her strong education on the influence of economic inequality in spousal abuse, Sandberg founded the organization, Women in Economics and Government, making it her goal to encourage more women to educate themselves academically in government and economics.
2. What style/approach of leadership is used? Why …show more content…
do you think this style has been successful for this person/organization?
Sandberg uses a transformational approach in her leadership form. I believe this style has been successful because of the fact that she’s able to connect people who have the same shared vision for gender equality, and equality overall. In certain societies, females dare not show progression in education or occupational growth. Sandberg challenges this perspective and allows everyone to join her organization Lean In, which focuses on continuous female advancement and growth.
3. How has the leader/organization motivated others? Describe in detail or give a specific example of the leadership or culture in action.
Sandberg dedicates an immense amount of energy in advocating for economic equality.
In 2010, Sandberg held a TED Talk demonstrating the ways in which the female population is held back and how, because of society’s views, they hold themselves back. Sandberg transcribed her ideas in her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead (2013) , which, encourages women to be more ambitious and passionate. She offers information on gender differences and how we can challenge ourselves to help merge the gap created by stereotypes. The book allows for females all over the world to be educated about the events that need to transpire in order to see …show more content…
change.
4. Where has this leader/organization been successful? How might the larger regional or national culture contribute to the success of the leader/organization? If this leader/organization would operate in a different location, how might the leader/organization need to adapt to be successful?
Sheryl Sandberg founded Lean In, an organization with the mission to empower the female population by encouraging them to join forces to combat gender discrimination.
The organization allows individuals to come together from all parts of the world, currently 150 countries participate in over 34,000 circles . A larger regional culture allows for women all around the world to come together and find ways to work together to break down barriers. Many countries are not accepting of Lean In, since it vouches for female empowerment. In order to be successful in these countries, campaigns would have to educate the society about the true value of the female role. However, these campaigns would have to show that men are still an important part of society and women can contribute in equal value. In an attempt to minimize gender stereotyping, Lean In paired up with the Getty Image to illustrate women in leadership position and men in the caregiver
position.
5. Self-reflection: Why did you choose to study this person/organization? What do you admire about this person/organization? Why do you admire this?
I chose to study Sheryl Sandberg because she’s always been an inspiration to me ever since I learned about her in high school. She vouches heavily for female empowerment and attempts to educate the female population on their potential. I admire how successful she is in an industry where men play a prominent role. As a female living in a world where men get higher salaries, simply because they are men, I support Sandberg and her goal to strive for economic equality.
