Emmy Rossum and Sheryl Sandberg are two prominent women in the Western world today. Rossum most notable for her starring role in the television show Shameless and Sandberg for her work in the social media community, pioneering work done in Facebook and being their first woman COO. In this piece I’m going to compare an Interview Rossum did with Chelsea Handler on her show Chelsea, and the book written by Sandburg titled Lean In. I will be analysing how Rossum and Sandberg use rhetorical factors to build their ethos and fight for women’s rights.…

The Lean In Panel discussed how women can succeed and overcome the adversities of sexism in the workplace. The Lean in Panel consisted of four women who have found success in the workplace as a woman. This discussion relates to both chapter 3 and chapter 9, which discusses human resources management, workplace diversity, and employee development.…
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the complexity of intersectionality as explained by Bell Hooks from her essay’s Understanding Patriarchy, Black Woman: Shaping Feminist Theory, and Feminism: a movement to end sexist oppression followed by Ladelle Mc Whorter's essay Sex, Race, and Biopower: A Foucauldian Genealogy, and to end Cherrie Moraga’s essay La…
The beginning of a neo-feminist movement is on the rise within commercial America. After a near half century of women still struggling to climb the corporate ladder in an unchanged, male dominated arena, this sisterhood of professionals has confirmed that something in their leadership and approach must change to make any real progress. The following will analyze how “Sisterhood Is Not Enough”, as titled in the New York Times, dissect the article to articulate any potential biases, and ultimately relate the concept of sleep walking through history within this particular context.…
In the speech, “The Crisis,” by Carrie Chapman Catt is portraying the empowerment of women and urges women groups to join the fight for equality and the fight for Women's Suffrage. Carrie Chapman converses of a sexual bias in the society that lives even in the modern day. From having our first female candidate stand for election for the post of President to a President that is that opposite of everything good in America. We live in the society where we think the society has got past the racial & sexual discrimination but deep down in this vicious societal norms demons still haunt over the bright light. Many women acquiesce because of the gender role they play in an abhorring closed in earth The speech uses an abundance of rhetorical devices imagery, metaphors, parallelism to impasses on the point she wants to convey.…
Tatum explains a situation where a girl struggles with the pain of being segregated and placed inside of certain gender role. Tatum talks about a story where a young Black girl had a teacher says “you people” in one of her comments to the girl (Tatum, 364). Tatum states that the young girl found herself wanting someone to talk to about the statement, so she asked one of her White girl friends. The White girl friend seemed to be unprepared for that type of question, and simply dismissed the statement as being insignificant (Tatum, 364). Since Tatum is also a woman, she has probably been through similar situations where she needed to give advice. This is a situation is stereo-typically played by a man as counselor. The gender role of a woman is continually changing, from being the woman who only cooks and cleans, to having similar job positions as men. “For example, 1950’s children grew up in a world of ‘Father Knows Best’ and traditional gender roles, while 1970’s children were born after the re-emergence of the feminist movement and in an era characterized by gender-role permissiveness” (Twenge, 2). This demonstrates how women in society can equally perform in most given situations, whether to give advice or lead a corporation. My gender role in my life has always played the role of leader and mentor. This role has been instilled into my mind at a very young age. I have been raised to believe that the role of the man is to lead, provide, and guide wherever I am placed in life. I am currently engaged to the love my life and I will be placed as head of the household once we are married. This doesn’t mean that my future wife will not play a major role in the relationship, but I will lead the role as head of the family. My fiancé will definitely have a voice in the marriage, and this information will be heard and understood by…
In her book "Where We Stand: Class Matters", Bell Hooks address the issues of classism interlocking with racism, white supremacist ideology and sexism in contemporary American culture. Her arguments in this book are greatly tied to her personal experience that she moved up from working class to the upper class as she succeeds in academic life and writing many books.…
Although, Sanders had preconceived ideas as a child, regarding gender equality and social class. For instance, he seemed to think that men’s roles where that of ‘warriors and toilers,’ although he learned from watching television that these where not the only destinies. There where doctors, teachers and bankers, but could never imagine having the opportunity to get a college education. His opinion of women from the college seemed to be that they where all from wealthy fathers and that they grew up having their fathers powers as successful men. Sanders seemed to put women he met at the college in one category, that they had privileged lives, he believed the women perceived him to be the enemy. His own feelings where, that that was not the case, he saw himself an ally. He understood that they wanted the same things, and that was to have a say in their lives. They yearned to have control in their future, and the right to live in peace.…

The focus on women’s appearance in the political world is alarming and degrading. Miss Representation highlights the issues with women leadership and representation, and I believe it was effectively delivered. Women in the political eye are constantly being scrutinized for how they dress. Hilary Clinton was talked about for wearing her “winter whites”, instead of being talked about for her policies as Secretary of State. I believe that this issue is even more prevalent today in her campaign for president. She is currently running in a male dominated race, and people are continuing to scrutinize her wardrobe. No one really cares what Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders is wearing, but rather they are focused on their rhetoric as politicians. Clinton had an added factor to be scrutinized for. Additionally, I found it interesting when Nancy Polocy was asked who was going to take care of her children while she ran for office. She then said that she believed that no man would have even been asked this question when he ran for office. The gender discrepancies that are rampant in the political world are alarming, and make me realize the biases that are far too prevalent in…
I am eclectic, existential, and passionate. If any factor were to threaten either of my cultures, it would challenge the internal balance that defines me. My right to march in the San Francisco Women’s Right March following Trump’s inauguration felt unapologetic after I read “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldúa. In fact, as the Editor-In-Chief of The Mark, I decided on the central theme to revolve around Women’s History Month and featured articles relating to the Glass Ceiling and global patriarchy. Class discussions inspire me to generate an individual response and reflect my outlook.…
Lean in, is a book that chronicles the struggles that women have in the workplace, especially the struggles women face due to gender-biased beliefs. Sheryl Sandberg, the author, gives many examples of her experiences and the experiences of her co-workers and acquaintances. In addition, the book is full of sited research studies that support and explain the gender-biased issues she talks about. Such studies prove the claim that sexism is not a fantasy. Sexism was and is present in today`s world and women need to lift their voices up.…
Sandberg said, "The proverbial glass ceiling had been cracked in almost every industry, and I believed that it was just a matter of time until my generation took our fair share or the leadership roles" (6). Sheryl Sandberg, as many other people, thought that the glass ceiling did not exist. Sandberg noticed how females peers leave since she was a student in the business school . To her, women increase the possibility of a glass ceiling in a business career each time that females leave the classroom. Now, she wants that everyone knows why does this happen. Most of the people know that men dominate several work areas and within important high positions. However, she wants to inculcate women to pursue goals and help each other to eliminate…
Personal Narratives carry more authority than scholarly studies, because they are the voices of women varying in color, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and cultural background. The feminist movement operates on the assumption that experiences of upper-middle class white women represent a universal female identity. In order for the feminist movement to gain traction, we must recognize the systemic oppression faced by women with multiple dimensions to their identity, and embrace their stories, experiences, and views (Gillis, S. 2004).…
